What have you done today in the Garden?

That Pelargonium was from a yard sale. Based on a web search, it might be the variety "Apple Blossom".

I like sunflowers too. I don't know why I didn't try dwarf varieties before.

Today's harvest.



Too hot to do anything else outside and doing that much wore out this old man LOL.

 

I think you could be right about it being the Apple Blossom. I have not seen those over here, but I have seen them on the telly. They are beautiful to look at.

That is a nice harvest of apples and toms. Very nice indeed.

It keeps raining so I've done nothing today apart from pruning off the end of this wisteria which was trying to turn the corner and grow across the front of the house.







It's been a bit of a disappointment this year as most of the blooms died off before opening. It may have been short of water beyond the kitchen side door.





There was a fair bit growing above and below the kitchen window, which being nearer the root would have taken much of the water..




But I've removed what you can see here, so there's now just the trunk, that grows over the top of the fence then round the side of the house.

That really big branch, grows from the wisteria on the pergola on the side of the garage, over the door in the fence and onto the pergola on the back of the house and crosses with the other one growing up from the base of the other pergola support post near the other side fence.






So now the only foliage of this one will be along the side of the house. I think I've achieved a nice balance with it, so I'm hopeful for lots of pink blooms next year.

 

I picked a pack of pretty pears.

Are they for eating out of the hand or for cooking?

Riley you really have control of that Wisteria. I will soon do my last pruning of the season.

 

I hope to can them this week. I want to test one first by cooking it on the stovetop. They are pretty firm right now.

Those pears look delicious Daniel, i think that they have to be picked before ripening.

It's been raining here this afternoon so nothing in the garden today.

 

I got into the rose pot-movers today.
Took the pots off them and cleaned them, removing the dab of silicone I put over the drain holes I drilled in their centres, these help retain water during the hot months but I don't want it there in the winter.

I also replaced all the castors, I take these off when I apply the silicone. Once the roses get a bit bushy, as the movers have mostly only three castors, there's a danger that a gust of wind can topple them over. This would likely mean a broken ceramic pot and they are expensive.
I don't need the castors in the summer, as I don't move them around a lot. But I will when the wisteria leaves start to fall.
Pruned off a lot of rose foliage with black spot. Then gave them and the soil in the pots a spray of Sulphur Rose.

 

Are those Bartlett pears, Daniel? That's the kind everyone I knew grew in Washington. I love bartletts for canning. They peel and core easy and hold their shape. My son that lives here likes canned pears. So I a!ways can a few jars of plain, vanilla, and spiced.

Hey Daniel - have I asked for your tomato pie recipe before? My brain is full. Would you have it handy?

 

Much has happened over the last month. Most recently I pulled the onions and have them drying in wheelbarrows. Soon they will be strung ALA Sjoerd style.

I grew two fun large sweet onion varieties from seed. One is called Exhibition and the other is Alisa Craig. They are fabulous! And so sweet! We made many onion rings when the kids were here and everyone took a couple home. The largest are the size of a soft ball.

I've been having random frosts over the last week. Within the next few days the squash will come into the greenhouse for curing and protection. The last tomatoes and peppers will be harvested for that to happen.


Hubby planted a spaghetti squash patch in the far corner of the pasture. It is remaining frost free with the protection of the trees and being slightly elevated. He's quite pleased with himself.

 

Mel—Mate, I am looking forward to see your strung onions. Those sweet onions sound nice… annnnd look nice, on your plate.

It is so odd to see frost in August, you’d better get a wriggle on with putting things indoors.
