The Good Day All Thread

Here too, I think. Tomorrow I will take a big box of Asian pears to the Food Bank. Maybe some apples, too.

 

@mel, your memory garden is so beautiful.

Sedums are blooming here too. Honeybees and native pollinators are all over them.

Today I puttered, for the most part.

Picked apples - The yellow ones are Porter, popular in the 19th century (discovered in 1800). Good for pies. The pink-tinged are Gravensteins.



I also picked Asian pears - I'll take these to Meals on Wheels tomorrow, and another box to the food bank.



I don't know the name of the Asian pears. Maybe Nijisseiki? This year was that tree's best crop ever, so far.

It's been a "busy as beavers" couple of days. Today is set to be another one. We've had ten loads of gravel delivered to the end of the driveway where the beavers are causing problems at the road access. Yesterday the tractor got stuck, then the dump truck got stuck. The tractor pushed out the dump truck. Sounds like a country song....... ( ear worm alert @Daniel W )



Today is dropping some poplar trees to make a burm beside the driveway with a neighbour's help. They will be wrapped in fencing wire before being laid beside the flooded field at the driveway entrance. I wouldn't want the beavers to think it was "skip the dishes" or "meals on wheels". It is a big big job that I will be glad to be done with. Then we will all be watching and waiting to see if Gov officials do their part of trapping the beavers, caging the culverts, and ensuring the road stays open in the spring.

I'll buy the popcorn to watch the show in the spring.

 

It's great you have a sense of humor about it Mel! It sounds like a crazy day.

This Spring I tried to pull my Prius ahead of the 23 year old Mazda pickup, to jump start the pickup's dead battery. The Prius got stuck in a potato trench. Those cars have smaller wheels, so they can get stuck easily. I ran the battery dead trying to rock it out. I found the trickle charger and several long extension cords, plugged the charger into the well-house outlet, charged the pickup, backed it out, then loaded up a pile of gravel for traction for the Prius tire in the trench. Backed out the Prius, washed both vehicles, and took a nap.

Words were said LOL.

 

That sounds like a long day hahahaha. A popcorn worthy.

 

Today is the autumnal equinox, or the first day of fall. Fall can't come fast enough for us--it's still hot here, and dry. However, this will change, hopefully in my lifetime!
Dribs and drabs of little chores today. Nothing important, at least not important enough that I got to them earlier!
Our plumber, Buck, is coming to change an outside faucet that drips and is hard to turn off. We enjoy his visits. He is so efficient, pleasant, and will always stop for a beer and a chat.

Good Saturday morning and happy first day of fall! Currently 12°C and sunny.
This is the first Saturday morning in months that I don't have a long list of 'must do today' chores, and it feels GREAT!
I'm relaxing and drinking my coffee and I'm not in a hurry to do anything, so I'm going to go with it. Something will come up soon enough haha

I can't believe it--Netty is taking a day off and not putting in 20 hours of hard labor! Way to go, girl!
Our Sunday is pretty restful. Husband is mowing the barn lot and back yard. I'm doing laundry and dusting. Where does all this dust come from? Timi cat tanked up on cat food, got her treats, and then left to escape the noise of the mower. At least she was in long enough to get petted thoroughly.
Looking forward to the coming week. Rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, the temperatures are supposed to drop, and no big projects are planned.

Not much in the garden today. I went to the medical center and got the "extra strong" flu shot for seniors. Then took more boxes of Asian Pears and mixed apples to the food bank. Then to Costco to ask when they start updated covid shots - maybe by the end of the week. While there, I bought a package of pierogis. I like them with just about any sauce, or just some oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

The shot definitely has me feeling achy and fatigued. But it's worth it.

 

Tuesday in the kitchen! I roasted two pie pumpkins to make puree to be frozen, and made pastry for tonight's quiche. The pumpkin is cooling so I can scoop out the meat, and the pastry dough is in the fridge, resting.
Husband went into town to register the car, and stopped by the grocery to get shaving cream. He saw that bone-in chicken breasts were on sale, so came home with two trays. We now have enough chicken breasts to last two months! They will outlast his shaving cream.
It's autumn in Texas, which means pumpkins, apples and air conditioning. Hope you are enjoying your autumn, sans AC!

 

Today I had an appointment for the new vaccine, so determined to get some rest ahead of that. Even so, I did can a batch of peaches.

I have a flannel sheet drying in the sunroom, that I soaked in starch ahead of making it into a quilt backing. It's not so warm now, and will need another day to dry completely. When it 's dry, I will iron and trim it, then assemble the quilt.

We are planning to change our rural internet. The current system is unreliable, involves using the cellphone as a hotspot. The new system will mean installing a high satellite receiver system. So thought about what that will involve.

The vaccine appointment went ok. There were about 100 or so people in line ahead of me, lots of complaining. I didn't mind, it's small potatoes. Plus, the nurses may be on strike tomorrow, so appointments may not be easy to find for a while. Now to rest, 2nd shot (first was flu, second is covid) this week.

 

Take good care of yourself, my friend. I hope your priks do not make you feel too poorly. It is a good excuse to hang about and contemplate your next gardening move.

Good luck with your new internet provider. I am surprised that you do not have cable or glasvezel. Is that fibreglass or something like that?
