Netty, we are having rain also, with thunder and intermittent downpours. Not a good day to be outside
I am in the kitchen making ham and potato soup while husband changes the remaining computer files to the new year. Computers make life easier:suspicious:--you used to wad up a piece of paper and throw it away, now it takes an hour or more to erase, change, and reset.
Hope you all have a drier day with no erasing, changing, and resetting!

Today is a busy day, bracing for tonight and the next week. Winter is arriving with some arctic air. The weather station for Environment Canada is about two and a half hours drive south from us, so this just gives us an indication of what to plan for.

I subscribed to a home energy efficiency gift box from our power company and these little lovelies arrived. They're made of dense foam. I've put them on all of the outlets in the main cabin part of the house, which often gets frost on the light switches during winter. The cold draft instantly stopped. I'm pretty excited about these little babies. They can be customized to every outlet. This meant pulling out the piano to get to one outlet...which led to dusting...which led to oiling the piano.....which led to playing the piano......:whistling::whistling:Hubby says I have a habit of doing that.

We have a heavy snow fall warning for tonight and tomorrow, and then tomorrow night the temps drop. Tomorrow will be snow removal before that happens.

Today I'll move the trucks and set up extension cords to plug them in. I need to get one more batt of insulation from the barn for the crawl space, just for my peace of mind. ( no repeats of frozen pipes from last year ). The rodents did a number down there this summer, and all of the pipes run through that area. Two more loads of fir and birch will get carried up the second wood stove in the loft, and then nothing to do but stay warm :)

I'm taking a break from repairing the velcro on Angus' homemade booties. After about -15 he likes to have them on. They look goofy as heck, because I made them from old gardening gloves with the fingers cut off. He looks half duck, half gardener. :) But very pleased with himself nonetheless.

It is fun reading about those challenges and solutions there. You have such a delightful way of writing.

Actually, me too. It wasn't as challenging when I did my own. Except dealing with the county code enforcers. But you are right. Also even though the details can be argued, this is a necessary change. I would have done it a year ago, but I couldn't find a contractor.

Today the plumber came in and roughed in the plumbing. No drama except he somehow banged on the electrical outlet in the neighboring room, and knocked it out of the wall. It's fixable.:setf_009:

I've been under the weather. I have a specialist appointment next week. For now, today I made a 2-week supply of dog food meals. Also, a batch of peanut butter cookie dough.

Since the bathroom is getting a new, south - facing window, so is my " man cave" and one other room. Different contractor, one I used before. That will be Thursday. Today, and yesterday, I moved stuff out of those rooms so there will be less to clean off drywall dust. It should be a 2 to 3 day job. When it's all done, it will all get "Spring" cleaned.

Sorry you have been under the weather. I hope you get answers soon and begin to feel better. If you are consulting a specialist, it has set my mind to wondering. Mind how you go.

Good Tuesday morning all. Currently -1°C and overcast with strong SE winds.
Weatherman says we will get either a lot of snow, or a lot of rain later today.
I'm heading out to buy myslef a new winter coat, and a new leash for the dog. His retractable leash broke this morning and he is distraught lol
Have a great day all :)

Happy Wednesday :) Today is a big snow removal day before the thermometer drops tonight. It's -12 with a -25 C windchill, which will become a -40 windchill tonight and tomorrow morning. It wouldn't be so bad without the wind, that's for sure. Hubby is running the plough truck, and I'm about to get bundled up for the shovel and snow blower. I have to blow snow with the wind instead of into it or I look like the abominable snow man.

The upstairs fire is lit now, which is always so nice. It keeps the main vaulted ceiling part of the home with the big windows quite warm. The fans are now turned down the hallway to heat the rest of the house. We only have a fleece sheet on our bed at these times of the year, with the woodstove 9 feet away. It's a cozy little nest in the cold.

I made a loaf of bread for a neighbour that picked up a missed prescription in town for me. They just left with their prize. There is a pot of chicken garden veggie soup on the stove, and another fresh loaf for Hubby and a GF loaf for me in the oven for dinner tonight. As soon as the timers go and everyone is finished working their magic, I'll move outside. Angus will climb into the back seat of the truck and be the co-pilot while I move snow outside. He has a very important job of napping while the ploughing happens.

Glory hallelujah, our hens gave us an egg today! You must understand that our ladies are "elderly", with the youngest being eight, and the oldest ten. Hens of that age usually are past laying eggs (if they attain that age at all and don't end up in a stew pot). Our hens are more pets than farm animals and live a life of luxury.
Having started today out so well I have high hopes for the rest of the day. Hope your day is good, also!

    Congrats on your egg MG!
Good Friday morning all. Currently -5°C and overcast. Weatherman says there is a big storm blowing in this afternoon bringing in up to 30cm of snow. That wouldn't be so bad if I got to stay home, but DD has a skating competition this afternoon! I'll take the vehicle with the snow tires, and make sure the tank is full and we have snacks haha
I'm sure the storm is completely exaggerated as usual, but theres always that slim chance and I like to be prepared.
Have a great day all :)

    Yay!
Our five hens are down to three eggs a day. One hasn't produced in years. The white leghorns seem to lay jumbo eggs like crazy, then die fairly soon after "henopause". Some of the other types seem to hang on for quite a while, for their well earned retirements.

    That's great testimonial!

I need to check mine, especially now that I know that those 1970's builders weren't into installing insulation. Cheap hydroelectric and all that, I guess. At least the new bathroom will be retrofitted.

Here's the current status of the bathroom.

    IMG_5105.jpeg

The tub platform is in place. The platform raises the tub, for easier ingress and egress. The water lines to the tub are on the left. Old one was on the right. That will make for better access when it's done, because the tub has an entrance door on the left side.

Yesterday I kept Rufus in the sunroom with me. He was not so worked up and barking at the workers.

The windows in other rooms were also installed. I couldn't be be happier with the timing - no gaping holes in the wall when it's bitter cold in another day, and snowing later today.

The contractor foreman told me that the project manager underestimated the tike need by half. So I went to Lowes and bought more.

The tub and vanity came. None were scratched or broken. I did inspect them before accepting, for a change.

Pizza for supper. Too much going on to worry about cooking.

Today was "interesting". I was prepared to hunker down, what with the cold weather and snow and wind.

    Then the power went off.

There's no way to know when it will come back on. It's too hazardous to stay in the house with such cold.

So, that meant a 35 mile trip to the in-law house in town. I wore two layers of warm clothes, piled some quilts in the car, food, and a snow shovel in case of problems. And a few day's supply of dog food. There wasn't much traffic although there were some dumb-****s doing various stupid things. I drove slowly, avoided other cars, and made it safely.

I left the faucets dripping and cabinet doors open in case the house freezes.

El niño is giving us some mischief this year.

Happy Saturday :) I'm grabbing a glimmer of internet. We now have a frost heave under the pole for the dish, which has the alignment off ever so slightly. It is very hit and miss. It is - 38 right now without the windchill, but -48 with the wind chill. Tomorrow things should look better. My girls in Northern Alberta are -42 without the windchill and -55 C with.

@Daniel W - That's scary stuff - I'm glad you and yours made it safely. Hopefully the power is back on soon. Forgive me for asking....but do you regret not having the wood stove with this situation? Or your power goes out so infrequently under these circumstances it is still all good? So nice to have the in laws close by. - glad you made it safely. Do you have much snow?

There's a lot of chilly-bum-itis going on these days. Stay warm and safe everyone that's getting a taste of Mr. Freeze.
