In honor of the Kentucky Derby: 100 years ago everyone had a horse, but only the rich had a car. Now, everyone has a car, but only the rich have horses. The stables have turned . . . .
This reminds me of my first job when I was seventeen. I worked for a life insurance company. They had cabinets of card files as big as this in the basement. These cards were sent to all companies, by the Life Offices Association. They gave the details of any life insurance applicant who had been refused a policy, or one which was issued, but subject to an extra premium with any company. Each company sent these details to them for cards to be produced. It was the job of two teenage girls to file new cards received and also check for any in the files, for any applicant to our company. It was a soul destroying job. Sometimes, if there were a lot of cards, they'd stick them all in the back of any drawer. Sit down behind a row of cabinets at the back of the room and have a smoke.
