What have you done today in the Garden?

Yours and mine are a lot alike.

It's odd here. Deer are jumping the fence and eating the squash plants, and they eat the lower fig leaves and shoots. They aren't touching the dahlias. I expected at least they would eat the daylilies, but so far not those either. I can't explain it.

My oriental lilies (per the labels) all turned out to be pink Asiatic lilies. Sort of dirty looking mauve. So did the Stargazer lilies. I don't like them! . Oh well, something to look forward to next year!

This is a busy time of the season. Newspapers is a great idea. If you have fans in the greenhouse with shade cloth that keeps the temps down . But in this high heat 90 and above it’s better for me to move all the plants out of the greenhouse it’s so tiny and easier to roll the flats and planters out. Cardboard box’s works outside. I use a lot too helps keep those darn unrelenting weeds down. Now that the heat of summer is in the mix and no rain expected anytime soon the pasture grasses have gone dormant and I don’t need to mow every day… No moles, gophers or deer in months.

 

Daniel I used plantskyyd to keep the deer away . It’s a bit spendy. I used the grannuels (amazon delivers same day) and it lasts for months. It’s a shame to see all your efforts and hard work become deer fodder. I’m surprised Rufus doesn’t make a fuss .
Since the pasture mowing routine , it also left no food for the deer snd haven’t had any deer so far at the lillies, hydrangeas..well you know the drill. Deer are so sneaky, hope you get it straightened out soon.

 

Picked some more gooseberries, don't need to water, it's raining but it's making everything grow now.

 

Deadheading and potting on the remaining Wallflower plants.
All 8 water butts are full now so I managed to decant some into 2 Suezi bins.....so we are well stocked up ...for now

 

Sprayed the perimeter of the house, barn and She shed with peppermint . It helps get rid of more insects like spiders that like to attack the house , webs in outer windows / screens and patios. Areas in the garden the voles and chipmonks like to swim under the soil surface tunneling thru like it’s water.
Also put out Plantskyyd in the garden area accessible to deer just in case one gets brave enough to get to close to my hydrangeas. the dogs always let me know when they come around.

Watered and checked the planters and other areas of the garden . It’s another hot one already heatin up like an oven outside.

Sorry I have not made it for a few days. I sometimes fall asleep at my computer.

Sunday I mowed grass. I did not get to mow Thursday because it rained, and I did not have time Friday.

Yesterday, a friend took me and mama cat to the vet. I had mama cat spayed. She is home and resting in her crate. The kittens do not need to nurse from her sore tummy.

It rained yesterday, and today it is really raining a LOT. We are getting the remains of Hurricane Beryl here. However, I did get a laundry basket and took my onions and garlic inside to finish drying. I have a drying table that I made from odds and ends around here, and had my onions and garlic trying to dry. It seems to rain every few days, so I took them in and put them in a cardboard box so they can finish drying. I guess I will need to use my utility knife to cut off the scapes. They are past using, but most are still hard. The scapes will be good compost.

No sign of my poor rhubarb...

I got two new books recently:

"The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants" by the Department of the Army. I have been browsing through it. A lot of plants are not listed, but it is still a nice book. I got it at the Tractor Store.

"Botany In A Day, The Patterns Method of Plant Identification" by Thomas J Elpel. It is a field guide to plant families of North America. It is also a very nice book. I got it for less on eBay. It is supposedly used, but looks brand new.

Guess I will do indoor work today, it is still pouring down rain. I got soaked this morning. If it keeps up, I will need clean dry clothes after every trip outdoors today.

Storm. I have been watching the devastation on the news. It sounds like it’s a bit soggy in your garden…bummer.

Aww kitty - surgery she will be ok in a few days and happy to hear she is doin well.

So much going on where you are located. Gardening this year has been quite a challenge with all the hazards from the weather storms in your area.

All your books sound very interesting. It’s amazing all the plants that are eatable just hangin out around us.

Started potting on the wallflowers, no need to water it's been raining again.

 

Well you know the old saying, “Don’t be a wallflower be a sunflower” .

The usual early watering.

Mostly some work prepping the other house for sale. On the way home, I had to make a stop at the gigantic orange home improvement store. I bought three lavender plants and a rosemary plant, while there. I like the leaf scent and they are heat tolerant (I think). They'll stay in shade until it cools off.

Some plants got watered twice. The biggest dahlias wilted the most.

 

Nothing worth talking about …. I did manage to bring the trash can back up the long half a block driveway. Using the garden tractor …hehe… Too hot to walk …
And watered some plants that are not yet established in the garden and finicky in this extreme heat.

 

The Bride wanted some more tutteplantjes, so we picked some up and planted them in the lottie .Then our neighbours here appeared and we had tea and choccies.it was very hot and the humidity was off the charts. After they left we pottered-about for a bit then melted off home. It was so cool in the underground parking garage, I didn’t want to go up to the apt. I did though and it was much cooler than I expected. I give credit to the type of shades that we installed.
