Two years ago we moved our old gas stove onto the patio, and built a custom awning so we could cook outside. I had taped some water resistant outdoor fabric to the siding, so grease splatters wouldn't soak into the paint. Now, with new fiber cement siding and paint, a new backsplash was needed. This time it's sewn like a curtain, but also with a slot at the bottom to hold a second curtain rod to hold it flat and provide weight. It's a treated, outdoor weight canvas-like fabric, fairly heavy weight. n Also simple to remove for cleaning. My original plan was to glue ceramic tile to a piece of 1/4" plywood, grout it, and hang it there. Probably better, but too much work and too heavy. This was much easier and lighter. Sewing is great. If you can think of it, you can make just about anything.
I like that backsplash. I believe this choice was good too. Tell me mate, do lots of folks cook outside like that?
Thank you Sjoerd. Lots of people have grills outside. Some have outdoor kitchens, especially in mild climates with a lot of nice weather. Fewer have a gas range. My grandparents and great grandparents had what they called "Summer Kitchens". They were sheds with stoves. They didn't have air conditioning, so having a kitchen outside of the house was a blessing. It aired out faster, and didn't heat the house. This outdoor stove gets used a lot. Keeps the house cooler and no indoor food smoke.
Your back splash is a practical good idea. Grilling food in summer is so special. We have a long cold wet winter and it’s a special taste for a short time until the next summer. I just had to throw away our barbecue , kept on the porch. Last winter the squirrels made a nice comfy home on the inside of the barbie right on all the grill sections. I may never barbecue again. Ugh ! Also have an electric smoker to smoke meats using different wood to flavor the meats. It’s better than the barbie in some cases.
Right Daniel— I see the logic. I believe that Mel does this as well. It seems a good idea, especially in keeping out cooking odours that can linger. I was just curious. One can learn so much on here.
