What have you done today in the Garden?

No we weren't ready, it was a shock but now it's gone but very cold.

 

It’s going well with garden clean up this season. A everyday deal and thankfully all the work earlier this season has helped with garden organizing different responsibilities. The garden pile is a good size and took the tractor bucket and turned the huge pile before the up coming rains flood the pasture. Who knows the composting pile insitsu about the size of a small bus could float away from the next bomb /wind storm predicted.

Phew the massive leaf loss is finally over. I try to stay ahead of the garden duties all season it’s a constant bla, bla, bla …well you all know the drill. I swear the trees, shrubs all have grown so much this season, they are all sneaking steroids on the side for way outta the norm super growth. It’s a jungle out there.

 

I worked at my church this morning. This afternoon I hauled a couple of loads of the mostly rotted wood chips to my "fish pond." It has never had any fish, but my boys tried to make a fish pond for me when they were teens. There is some layer of rock hard soil too close to the surface, so I keep adding leaves and compost, and have been planting flowers there instead. I think I will put my red canna lilies in it. They will have room and plenty of sunshine there. I can put a bunch of zinnia and marigold and cosmos seeds out there to go with them. I can put some echinacea out there also.

There are some extra wild blackberry bushes behind my chicken coop & shed. I think I will put them in front of the chicken coop. They will be more accessible when they have berries on them. I want to clean out behind the shed area anyway.

We had some more rain overnight and a few T storms.

 

Pac— I don’t think I know anyone that works as hard as you…and has so terribly much to maintain. It is staggering. Deep bow and chapeau, mate.

AA— nice use of that ex-pond. Perfect, in fact. Well done.

 

Nothing today it's been snowing.

We stood on the first tee this morning at 9.00am with the temperature at -1C.
There was frost on the fairway, but further round the sun had melted it, though it lingered where the course was in the shade of trees. It had warmed up by the time we were on the back nine and it was a pleasant sunny day.

I had intended to clear leaves this afternoon, but my garden vac packed up after a couple of minutes. The motor burned itself out. Maybe I was asking too much of it, yesterday. They aren't worth repairing, so I've binned it. I've ordered a Flymo 3000w from Homebase, reduced to £63 from £85. I'll pick it tomorrow morning when I do the shopping. The leaves can wait until tomorrow afternoon.

 

Yes our snow soon went but too cold to garden. Ours is -2c feels like -5.

just a couple of garden thoughts.

I did get 3 more loads of wood chips hauled to my fish pond/flower garden today, and trimmed more zinnias and marigolds and saved the seed heads.

Placing woods chips down now is a great idea before the wind currents bring all the weed seeds to plop down in our gardens. OMGOODNESS next spring the garden is a huge weed battlefield .

 

I collected my new Flymo Blower/Vac from Homebase, this morning.
It's a bit fiddly changing from "blow to suck," but it works well and for the same price as a tank of petrol, it's not bad for the money. It comes with a two-year guarantee.
This afternoon I used the new machine to blow some wisteria leaves off the two pergolas and collected most of them up by sweeping, then the rest with the vac. Of course more were falling as I was working and plenty more were coming down off next door's silver birches ending up on the lawn. Then it started to rain. So I came in.
If it's dry tomorrow, I'll strip the wisteria on the garage pergola. I can do that using my step stool. The branches will also get a bit of sorting. I can use my Flymo mower to collect the leaves on the lawn.
The pergola on the back of the house is still heavy with wisteria leaves. I'll need the ladder to strip those and I need to reduce the number of "heads." There's also a 6ft pergola crossbeam that needs replacing, I can do that once the leaves are down and I can see what I am doing.

 

Great cartoons, AA., especially with the bent-over gardener…and then the pic Pac showed. Wow—waaay funny. My Bride said that she would buy one of those. Haha. She works like that, but me— I can’t, so I just kneel on the ground.

 

...Great poster pics everyone...... I'm like that @Pacnorwest not much stops me from doing something in the garden.......although I'm not as tough a cookie as your character is in the pic and have to be appropriately kitted out .
I live by the saying 'the weather isn't bad, just your choice of clothing '.

 

Managed to cut back and snuggle down for the Winter 8 more Dahlias in the central border. Only 27 more to do.I also discovered another 5 that need moving to a new home next year so they will need to be lifted and overwintered.
