I think family history can teach us a lot about ourselves and our community / country / world. I did mine back to early 1700s. I quit at that point, they are just names to me. Also, records get lost to disasters and wars. Mine are a mixture of German (my dad's side) Alsatian, English, Irish, Scottish, and a little Swiss. My mom's side served in the US Revolutionary War (US side originating from Scotland, and Hessians), and Civil War, while my Dad's side fought in the US vs. Philippines war, and WWII. All that was kind of shocking...

Thank's Sjoerd. I don't claim to be that skilled at it, but sometimes I can make something work again, and look better.

I replaced the broken rail in that dresser. Then I applied a teflon tape that is non-stick on one side, to the wooden slides. It worked like a charm. Polished it and now have a good, solid dresser.

We don't really have long winter evenings. By the time evening rolls around and we've cleaned up from dinner, we are ready to watch a few favorite TV programs or videos.
Whatever we can keep growing in the garden we take to a local food pantry for distribution. They can't take baked goods (boo-hoo:crying:) but fresh veggies they can accept. Husband is a great woodworker, and makes furniture and small objects for our home. I pet the cat a lot.
We are as dull as dishwater!

@Daniel W I found that I had gone back as far as I could with most of my family tree research as records were lost due to the extensive damage / fires that were the result of war damage on London. You may find info in the church records but you have to know which churches otherwise it would require a lot of traipsing around 100's of them. Records weren't always logged acutely either as back in the day a lot of people were illiterate too.
I so agree with you that you can gather a wealth of information from your family tree, not just on the people but also you gain a snapshot of what their world was like too. History really fascinates me. :)

@Oreti I started doing the family research (through ancestry.com) I am to the late 1700's. My moms side did it back in the 1980's and the story goes we are related to Lord Admiral Nelson and I have Dutch royalty in there too allegedly. I will find out eventually if the stories are true :smt081:smt081:smt081

Yes I use Ancestry. Com too. Once you get going it becomes quite addictive. :D

@Clay_22 and @Oreti I really enjoyed ancestry website. I was even able to connect with some distant relatives who I didn't know existed, and send them photos and immigration papers for our shared great great grandparents. My parents had both inherited their family's troves of photos and documents. I wanted them to become a permanent resource, so I uploaded everything I thought might be appropriate, onto ancestry website.

There is a PBS program that discovers extensive ancestries for various people - usually celebs, but I think it's interesting anyway. "Finding Your roots "

That brilliant @Daniel W . I've done the same and have uploaded all the personal information of nearly all the members of my sadly departed and never met maternal family too onto Ancestry.

My Uncle compiled our Paternal family tree quite extensively ,he sought additional information of many individuals by going around the UK seeking out Church and County records. Unfortunately I haven't really had the time or inclination to go that far.

We have a very similar programme over here too called 'Who do you think you are', which delves into celebrity family trees...and as you do I also find it very interesting too. :)
