Good Thursday morning all. Currently -9°C and snowing. Temperatures are going to rise to 0°C this afternoon, and then cool off again later. According to the radar, snow will be stopping shortly. Good thing, because today is errand and shopping day.
The Chimney cleaning went great yesterday, definitely worth the money for my piece of mind. He did almost every thing from inside, using a flexible cleaning brush/rod with a camera at the end and an enormous vacuum. He did a thorough cleaning and inspection before headed up on the room to clean and inspect the cap. I was very pleased with his work, and I'll be calling him back at the end of the burning season. I'd rather not do that job myself!
@Sjoerd My banana bread turned out great and it is already half gone! My kids lurve that stuff too!
Have a great day all :)

We have also had bird nests in the dryer vent, bats and birds in the double sided fireplace chimney and bees in the wall.
Even with various protective measures to prevent the invasion , birds. bats, bee’s are very clever little architects.

Netty chimney sweeps did a good job. That’s done. Do you have to have the chimney pass inspection in order to continue insurance for your house ?

DHR mentioned that in above post , to renew insurance proof of chimney inspection/ cleaning is needed.

Good Friday morning all. Currently -9°C and overcast with strong winds. We had snow and therefore blowing snow overnight, and I'm not sure the condition of the driveway yet. I will assess when I head out for my dog walk. There is also a winter travel advisory in effect for today, due to the snow and winds. I don't have any where I need to be today, so I'll be staying safe at home. Stopped at work yesterday when I was out, only to discover an immense snow load on the hedges. I spent 2 hours pulling snow off them with a roof rake so my shoulder is sore today. But I feel better knowing that the hedges wont be damaged from the weight of the snow - I don't enjoy restoring shaped cedar hedges.
Some cleaning to do today, and puttering out in the yard/garage.
@Pacnorwest No, I didn't have to get an inspection for my insurance company. I just like knowing my chimney is free of creosote as the thought of a chimney fire terrifies me.
Have a great day all :)

I'm a bit miffed about this new DVD I bought from "Hive"

It's the follow on from the original series of ten years ago, of which I have the box set, (18 DVDs). It was only available in the UK since 25th January, although it's been around for a couple of years in the USA. It's also available if you subscribe to Disney+ which I don't.

All are Sony videos, this new one says "UK" but won't play on my Sony DVD player or the old Philips one we have in the other room.

An e-mail to "Hive" received a quick response. They say they will contact the manufacturers. I would imagine, apart from those people who have multi-region DVD players, they'll be getting them back.
My DVD player is just a "cheepo," it was less than £40 three years ago

@Doghouse Riley - I'm sorry to hear of the DVD playing problems. When my son was younger he travelled to London and Ireland. He came back with a collection of DVD's  , not realizing that they wouldn't play on our equipment in Canada. I don't understand the technical logistics of it all, but he was a bit dumfounded, thinking "a DVD should be a DVD Mom!!". I believe they are still on a shelf in his room. hahaha. I hope you can figure it out.

You recommended this series to us and we loved it. We've loaned it out a few times to family. I didn't realize there was a new sequel to Justified. I'm pretty sure we still have a week or so on Disney + from when the kids were here. I'll check it out. If not I'll try to order it and hope it plays :)

There are actually five regions for DVDs. A lot of DVD players are multi-region.
I've had a response from the retailer already. They say they've contacted the manufacturer who have said "chuck it" they don't want it back and Hive have refunded me the cost. I reckon the whole stock that has been produced for sale in the UK is of the wrong format. There's two series of the new version. There's only the first one on the DVD.

The things my wife says often makes me smile. She's not very technically minded, she can struggle with the TV remote sometimes. But in earlier years she had no problems knitting complicated fairisle jumpers for the kids from patterns she made up in her head.
She's on painkillers, including morphine patches, as a result of her back injury last year.
So her memory is not always that good, remembering job descriptions takes some effort.
Her stairlift is making a slight noise, I don't think it's serious, I can only describe it as the same noise as the wheels on the local metro trams, make when negotiating a tight turn. The stairlift has to do that at the top of the stairs. It's under a three-year guarantee, so I've got the Companion service engineer coming next Thursday to check it out. I told her about it earlier in the week.
She was going through her diary yesterday when she said, "What time is the squeaky man coming on Thursday?"

Good Saturday morning all. Currently -15°C and clear. We are again under a winter travel advisory because of expected snowfall this afternoon and tonight.
We are headed to competition today. DD is not a competitor, but a Coach this time with her young skaters. Should be a good day, and hopefully home before the snow starts.
Yesterdays snow once again filled my driveway and my neighbour came to my rescue for the 4th time this year with his giant blower. I was able to keep it clear until the winds stopped for the rest of the day. The amount of snow fall here is getting ridiculous, making up for the last several years that we barely got any snow. The next 8 days are forecast with snow. UGH.
    I am ready for spring!
Have a great day all :)

Today we are out of the - 20s for a couple of days and then back close to -30. We let the upstairs fire burn out so that a chimney sweep can be done before the next arctic front comes to visit.

This fire heats our bedroom in the loft, and the main area of the cabin which is an open living room, dining room and kitchen. So while it is out, it is a good day to bake bread and make some chocolate chip cookies for Hubby.

We are planning a town trip in five days, the first in three weeks. The "to do" and grocery list is a little long. Hubby's incumbent bike ( which used to be my Dad's) has packed it in. It doesn't owe us anything. It is a necessary piece of equipment for Hubby though. He has resigned himself to do without, but I secretly ordered one. Because of it's package weight, it will not come to our little post office closer to home ( 45 minute drive away) but instead will be at the local government post office in town. I will pick it up on our town trip - I think he will be very excited. :) He may rant at the cost at first ( until I tell him of the good price I found), but as soon as he uses it he will be pleased.

Good Sunday morning all. Currently -9°C and snowing. Again. Ugh.
We are under another special weather statement, this time a snow squall warning, until Monday morning. Another 10-20cm expected with high winds. The blowing is what concerns me as DD has to be at competition today, and hope we aren't snowed out of our driveway before we get home. Her skaters competition is only 15 minutes from home, but past lots of open fields so I may drop off DD and come home to driveway patrol rather than watch.
Other than that, its food prep day, and laundry day so that will keep me busy until its time to pick her up ar 1:30.
Have a great day all :)

No snow here today but freezing temps.
Planning on staying inside celebrating the Puppy Bowl . All the dogs are seriously watching the ball game all day.

Then the Super Bowl the football game of the year is the game to watch between the commercials using the huge draft horses and all the other content of some cleverly produced commercials.
And…Watching the talented athletes in the football game of the year. Super Bowl 2025: Kansas City Chiefs v. Philadelphia Eagles. Which team will win the champions of the year?
