@Zigs I promise I won't tell Tetters but, I'm pretty sure she can read. :nerdy:

@Tetters I see that from your pic above that Black salsify flowers look like dandelion flowers. I don't know how I feel about that . :dislike:

OH MY Goodness, @Pacnorwest , thanks for that info. I'll be sure to be very careful saving seed. The last thing I need is more weeds in the yard. :(

S'ok Annie, I just pretend not to notice - as long as he's happy.
It rather looks like Zigs will be growing some now anyway, as he's remembered he likes the stuff.
When it comes to the seeding problem, you will do away with that altogether if you harvest all of the crop when it's ready. Just as you harvest the carrots. Once they are up, there won't be any seed to cause a problem, will there. (Zigs just thought of that)
As a 'by the way' I found that a good way to prolong the freshness of root veggies in the refrigerator is to wrap them tightly in damp cloth and roll them up. They last well for weeks like that in the veggie drawer. :D

Thanks @Tetters , I usually wash the carrots and put them in a baggie still wet. Remember to wear gloves when you peel the black salsify as it makes your hands a sticky mess, they say. I hope you and I both like the taste too. :)

Mmm - if you did want to collect seed from one or two plants for next year, I think the best way may be the paper bag method. Tie them over the head of the plant before they ripen.
I always found that root veggies tend to go a bit rotten if wrapped in plastic bags, and they seem to last longer in cloth - I suppose it's because they can breathe a bit. I don't usually wash them, but store them dry and prep them afterwards.

Yes, a paper bag over their head, like I wish I could wear when out in public so I don't scare the children !!

Funny that - I tend to have the same effect on children, I'll have to watch out for a bag that's big enough :D

I've sown the seeds today, after Tetters "rescued" them from the floor :D

I'll keep these in the veg patch for seed :)

:D Very stumpy roots at the moment. They seem to be perennials so the roots might get bigger, but the main idea was to get some seed. The ones we sowed on the 25th March haven't shown any signs of germinating yet
