Ahem, I really try to keep a clean front porch. There's lots of trucks passing by in the daytime sending road dust everywhere and now it's tree pollen season here but, leaves and sticks normally aren't present on the front porch...until now !! I don't know what these two house wrens were thinking !! A bit claustraphobic up there, wouldn't you say ?
Well, I'm more pleased that they have chosen the far corner of the porch rather than the glass transom over the front door !!
Well Anniekay, that's what you get for having such an inviting porch! Just be glad they are not barn swallows. We have a pair that try to nest on the carport every year. They can quickly make a terrible mess on our car! They finally settled on a corner of the house. Okay, it's birds 1, humans 0!
Now they've decided to turn the front porch into a Subdivision !! I'm really not that pleased since they're more than likely to poop all over everything... AND... there is a perfectly shabby house next door that they could've chosen where poop and mess would hardly be noticed !!
They are very smart, I have to give then that! As they I believe instinctively know that in your house their chicks will be safe. As you aren't the type who will harm them. Some will disagree with me. For which I don't blame anyone, (as everyone is entitled to their opinion). But I've lived long enough to see th8s type of thing happen many times - All animals to some degree intuitively know which place and person is safe to be around. It's part of their survival instinct. Which is strongest when they are in the process of creating their next generation. So looking on the positive side, you have a great opportunity to document their entire process of raising chicks. Therefore I say get a tripod and start uploading everything on YouTube.
We had a Pheasant a few years back who thought it was a good idea to nest in the fruit tunnel I would have meant the loss of the year's fruit as I would have needed to keep the door open, but a Magpie found the nest and ate all the eggs
While mowing the pastures today I found a lot of quail feathers in one large area. It looks like something is hunting the quail again. I hope that bobcat isn’t back again. There have a lot of quail they hang out in the brush and wild blackberries, and they pop in from time to time for a dip in the bird pond. On sunny days , two males and females pop in with a gang of babies, 15-20. They move so fast.. it tricky to get pics .
He just found them first, we have foxes as well He also pecked a hole in the cat's head I put up 3 nest boxes a few weeks back, one for a Robin or Wren, others for Blackbirds and Blue Tits. The Blue Tits are using theirs already but the Wren is nesting round the back where I haven't finished the boarding
Well, it happened. Somehow this second nest ended up on the ground. At least two eggs were in it. I don't know what got to it because no claw holes in my curtains. There is a daylily in the bed beneath that something sat on, it's all flat but there's really no evidence as to what happened . I BUT, the one in the corner is very active, Mom and Dad fly in and out with food in their mouths so, pretty soon we should have fledging !!
This is one tenacious mother bird !! I always sit out on my front porch with a coffee early in the morning. Two days ago the old nest fell. I think the wind, rather than an animal loosened the curtain and caused it to fall. So, I pulled the curtains together and put the tieback on. This time momma bird built it between the two curtain rods. It's a sturdier platform for the nest. Hopefully, this will help keep the nest together.
Finally got pics of Mom and Daddy birds carrying grubs to feed the kiddies !! I had to take the pictures through the window from inside because they are nervous and won't come towards the nest if I'm outside.
