Yes, you can do exactly that! Sprinkle some on some multi purpose, standard compost, water lightly, and away they go. They are fragile though and over watering will be the death of them. Don't forget, they come from sunny places, so need warmth, plenty of light and will not appreciate waterlogged compost. As they grow, pinch out the tops completely for your first harvest rather than just nipping off leaves, and the plants will bush up in no time. Depending on the size of the pot, not toooo many seeds, just a few will do the trick.

The plants will let you know. You don't want them to get "leggy" and you don't want them to bloom. The flowers are pretty, but you want the plant to put its efforts into the leaves.
    Enjoy! :D

    Basil

They let you know by getting long and scraggly (leggy). So pinching them gives them strength from their base. And they let you know by blooming. :smt023
