I am wanting to grow some strawberries.....does growing them in terra cotta strawberry pot work pretty good?? Or is there a better way?? My girls would love this!!! mgf~ 8)

I never had much luck with strawberry pots. I just couldn't seem to keep them from drying out. Lately I've been wondering how strawberries would do in tipsy pots. Anyone tried it?
Strawberry pots are horrible to water. If you pour from the top the bottom rots and the top dries out. If you try to water in all the little cups the dirt comes out. What some have been doing around here seems to be working pretty well. Get some pvc pipe (the hard white pipe plumbers use) and drill holes in it, you may want to cap one end. Then plant it in the center of the pot with an inch or three above the soil. Pour your water in the pipe it spreads it out and doesn't wash, it also helps to keep the bottom from getting to much. I tried an herb garden in a pot like that, but the soil they provided kept washing out and the plants wouldnt grow So I emptied the pot. I was going to plant the seeds in regular pots, but they disappeared Still have the pot though.
I have pansies in my strawberry pot - so far they're doing well enough, but I love the idea of the drilled piping down the center.
I have used the pipe down the center - it works well but I have a better idea. I had terra cotta strawberry pots and I just picked up the whole pot and submerged in a large bucket of water for an hour or so. Then lifted it out and the excess drained away as long as there was a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot.
I was really hoping that the strawberry pot thing would work!! Putting them in a tipsy pot thing would be cute too!! My uncle has hens and chicks in his too!!! I always love that look! mgf~ 8)
I think strawberry pots look lovely - especially if you have a patio that you want to grow them on. I saw some great ones in a giveaway in a magazine last month so I'm holding out for that!
I just found out last night hubby ordered some upside down strawberry pots for the porch. I wish he had told me his idea. I'll let you know how it works out. I don't have much confidences in the idea. The good thing is they were cheap.
