Looking to get info. on planting a garden over a septic system. Anybody know any special precautions or problems planting over the system may cause? I'm thinking extra fertilizer???? Also, any suggestions as to whether we'd have to do raised beds? Thanks for comments or help.
You would have to be sure there is plenty of room between your planting and the tank itself, if it ever has to be replaced it will create a really large hole. Tree and shrub roots could cause a problem if they reached either the tank or leach field and clogged things up. But the water coming thru the leach field is supposed to be sufficiently cleaned to not harm plants and the environment. Do you know how far underground the piping network is, you might have to make raised beds to prevent damage from tilling or roots.
My husband alway warned me not to "get any funny ideas" and plant over the septic system. Pity too...the grass grows so well there!
Grasses and plants with shallow roots should be all right . Anything edible should be strictly avoided .
