Tonight while feeding my fish I noticed several baby fish! :sete_082: I have 4 Shubunkins in my small pond and all 4 looks really fat so I'm not even going to start guessing who the Momma is~maybe I should be asking, "Who's your Daddy??" Does anyone know anything about breeding fish?? I'm thinking that the babies are happy and doing a good job of hiding out~there are quite a few. Any input would be helpful. I did read on another site that a lady was able to convince her DH that she needed to save each baby so she got her hubby to build her a new larger pond! I really don't see that happening at my house!! mgf~
I really don't know anything much about breeding fish Mgf as I only have a wildlife pond. However, your fish seem to be at home in your pond or they wouldn't produce young. I'd be tempted to leave well alone and let nature take its course.
I know in the case of koi they are complete cannibals. They eat every egg they can find an any little fish that actually hatch.
Tonight when I checked out the pond there were the babies..... swimming to and fro~ I feed the big fish and then found some flake fod for the babies. The babies don't seem afraid of the big fish~ I suppose I will just leave them alone. If they make it then they were ment to be.....right?? I will do my best to take care of the wee babes~ I will post photos once they are large enough to see~ mgf~
mgf, if you have some floating grass or plants in the pond it will give the babies an area to hide from the larger ones and give them more of a survival rate. I know someone that started with three fish and now have over 30 in their pond. Each winter they lay more eggs..so spring means OH BABY..LOL
THis is all very exciting. We are putting a pond into our back yard this summer. (digging now) My husband and I were talking about some fish possibly, but we don't want a lot to take care of. I told him it sounds like we probably only need 2 to start with.
