This is the first time my gladiolas have bloomed. I really feel like a gardener now! I just love the color! (Sorry, this pic just won't resize) I can't they bloomed in the shade of my front yard!
Wow what a lovely red they are Cory neither wonder you are so proud of them - I would be too!! I planted glads again this year but, so far, only the leaves have appeared. BTW your photographs are fine - just the right size. :-D
Thanks Chitweed. Actually, they have been in my yard for about 6 years. I've moved them around a couple of times to try to get them to bloom. I guess they found their home!
Well done Cory! I had a few flowers on mine this year (like Chitweed, I don't do so well with them), I was so proud when they bloomed, and later that same day, it absolutely POURED with rain . . . so much for my glads.
A delicious wine color. If you want glads to multiply, plant them a little shallowly. Normally they do best in full sun. Looks like they might be getting a little shade from that wall or surrounding plants.
Very nice color, I am also one of those people that dont have good luck with glads...WELL, actually I did where I used to live, but not here.
They are in a semi-sunny spot in my front yard. It is so shady, but I was determined to try and get "big color"in my garden, not the usual impatiens, begonias, etc. Plants look full and colorful close up. But cant see them from the street! Another View, My husband owns a lawn and farm service. We are the proverbial, mechanic with the broken car, plumber with the broken pipes. My mission is to change the landscape, but my hubby loves his lawn. (it's easier to ride the mower than to tend to a garden, plus he tends to other gardens all day everyday!) I love my Hostas. This is growing under my Gladiolas, Good or bad? Whats it called? Can you tell I love Cats? If anyone has ideas to bring my front yard to life, I would love your comments, bear in mind, my husband Julian loves his lawn and I love the trees! It's like a little bit of the high country in the desert for me!
The plant under your glads is an ice plant, it shouldn't be a problem, but I do agree with Joan, they like sun. For some bold shade color try Persian Shield, Alternanthera "Party Time", or Plectranthus "Mona Lavender", all shade lovers, the first 2 are foliage plants, the Mona flowers. Torenia is also another good flowering shade plant and comes in many colors.
