Years ago I had a large toad in the backyard, it was there when we moved in. But I think it either died from old age or accidently hopped into the yard next door with the Rottweilers and became a target....I am seriously hoping it was the natural death scenario. This morning I was out back repotting some plants and planting others. There was a terracotta planter that I had unplanted and turned over before the rain last weekend to keep it from becoming a mosquito bed. I flipped it over and there was the toad. He sat there for several minutes then disappeared. Not wanting to move the pot if he had decided to make it his permanent home, I gently lifted it up and there he was. I have no idea what kind he is, I will be doing google searches for Toad ID sites to find out. But I am so excited to find that I Have A Toad!!
Don't ya just love those little guys? I enjoy frogs and toads so much. Lets hope he decides to stay and make a family.
Funny you should mention that Dan, I was doing some searching a bit ago and had decided the same thing. http://www.zo.utexas.edu/research/txher ... iceps.html Nice to have it confirmed, thanks.
Congrats! He sure is cute. I love my little frogs. Especially Mr. Biggles. Here he is below...peeking out the mulch.
OK Daph, I'd always wondered what your avatar was!! I wondered why you used a dormant iris rhizome, lol! Very cool about your toad!!
I have lots of toads but the little tree toads are so tiny and cute.Your toad will sure be munching lots of insects.
That's funny critterpainter. I need a better photo of Biggles. This spring I worked in his mulch bed....disturbing him each time. He actually moved out of the toad house and hid in the mulch. My husband and I were standing on the porch when we heard a rustling noise. We turned looked in the direction of the noise and found Biggles head peaking out of the mulch. Below is a picture of him before I started digging around in his home. Every night he use to come out of his house and sit in the middle of the saucer of water I leave out.
I still get excited to see one of 'my' toads in the garden because I know he/she is doing a grand job of clearing up the slugs and other creepy crawlies. Nice to know one has moved in to your garden Toni - hope it stays. :-D Daph Mr. Biggles is soo cute and I love his little toad house.
Right now I think all of mine are tucked into bed, lol. I moved in closer to town and all the neighbors feel like they shouldn't have weeds, so they use so many chemicals... I limit my use and only as a last resort do I use them. I had 2 tree toads on the house this past summer. They stayed in an old bird house that was close to the house for decoration. I don't know what they do if the birds decide to use it....Sherry8
Congratulations on you new family member. How nice to have all that wild life around. Around here it is simply too dry for them. Thanks for sharing your froggies and toadies. Cute little things.
