Technically this is the second sock I have knitted since the first one was large enough to hold both my feet...that is what happens when you don't pay really close attention to the pattern. I thought I could change up the cuff design on my own but now I know better In case anyone else is thinking of knitting socks, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease yarn...80% acrylic, 20% wool and size 5 double pointed needles (size 3.75mm European sizing) You can find the pattern for free http://knittingonthenet.com/socks.htm it also has a picture but there is a seperate link for that. Now that I know what to do I am going to start work on a pair of red and white striped socks, hopefully to wear at Halloween.
Those look very comfortable, Toni, and so evenly knit too. Well done! (I've never knitted socks, only small baby ones.)

My mother once lnitted a pair of walking socks for Ian - lasted him years and years. However, I've never tried anything bigger than babies bootees. I have a feeling that if I ever did I could keep all the elephants feet at the zoo warm and cosey as my knitting is always somewhat on the loose side. Great job Toni!!!
Impressive. I briefly knitted as a child but my left-handed sister taught me. I'm hoping to relearn from a knitting show that's coming on PBS this fall. I'd Love to knit some warm socks like those.
Thanks everyone. It is a comfy sock, after I get the striped ones finished for Halloween then I can get it's mate done. Maybe even have some nice cool weather by then for wearing them...but that is in still in question. Bethie, I taught myself to knit 40 years ago using articles in Women's Day and Family Circle magazines. When I took up the needles again about 4 years ago I was amazed at the number of free patterns on the internet and all the new techniques women have developed over the years. I have a book titled 'The Big Book of Knitting' by Katharina Buss that is really good. She shows picture of all the knitting stitches along with clear instructions, different binding off and casting on techniques, how to make different necklines, sewing sweater pieces together and lots more. I found mine at Half Priced Books but Amazon has it available too.
CG, the pattern I used is super easy and very well written. I had bought a sock instruction booklet that was very confusing and had almost given up on figuring it out. I am not working on a pair of red/white stripe socks for halloween.
Hey why did you give up on the red-white ones for halloween? And have you finished making a partner for the red one? It would be pretty useless on its own. My mom once knit me a sweater. I still have it though its a bit small for me now. The shape is still intact.
Ooops, there is as typo in that post of mine. I meant to say that "I am now working on a pair of red/white stripe ones for Halloween" I got them finished in time to wear to a party the Saturday before Halloween but it was way to hot on Halloween night to wear them. Since then I have been working on christmas gifts when I can't get out in the garden, so the red sock is still sitting alone waiting for it's mate.
Looks like the perfect answer for a cold evening, all you need is a roaring fire in the fireplace, and your all set. Tom
