Hi from new member who grows shittake mushrooms

I am growing shittake mushrooms in three green houses output is about 900 lbs per week. I am curious to know the proper amount of fresh air ventalation required any one out there that can help me.

Welcome from northeast Wisconsin. Wow...900# a week??? It sounds like you're already doing it right and could tell us a thing or two about growing them. I know next to nothing about growing mushrooms, but it sure sounds like you are doing something right! 900 lbs a week - that's a lot of mushrooms!

Welcome, Picker, from mid-Norway. Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you! Would you recommend I try to grow those mushrooms outside in summer? I've never tried them but really want to.

 

Hi and welcome to the Stew from central Texas.
I worked in a plant I was not a grower.
I know if you are growing them in a greenhouse you need a resperator.Thats a lot of Shiitake and when they open you are breathing a huge amount of spores from them.The grower told me
it is very important that you not inhale that many.I will try to talk to Maria and see how much fresh air you need to put on them.I have seen the Shiitake logs they grow them on which are made from sawdust.and I do not know what else.Oyster mushroom are almost as bad to grow .You need a resperator to be in the rooms with
them.My friend Teri was a night operator and worked with them and also wore one .If I can reach her then she will tell me about how much fresh air to put on them.

 

Glendann you are right about the wearing of a suitable mask when working around shittakes. I keep a large supply on hand so even visitors can wear one,of course workers must wear them all the time while on location. Droopy the sawdust blocks require heat and moisture, so I am not sure you could grow them outdoors in Norway. I keep mine at 63 far with the humidity around 95%.

63 deg F is about 17 deg C which is normal summer temps for us. Our moisture percentage isn't quite as high as 95% even though it sometimes feel like it.

 

Droopy they can also be contaminated
with other viruses and diseases.Picker will tell you
viruses is a dreaded word around any type of mushrooms growing.We hardly allowed visitors and when we did they had to walk through solutions to make sure you were not carring any on your feet.

I probably sound very silly now, but I never really thought about all the precautions that should be taken when growing mushrooms, it is quite fascinating.

hey what is needed to grow mushrooms?

It takes lots of very strong compost mixture.Some ingredients are chicken litter,turkey litter,Soy bean oil ,straw,lime,ummmm molasses,I can't think of the rest control temps.water for dampness.A fresah air damper.I don't know anymore as be sure and wear a mask or resperator.I wasn't around the growing or compost areas only know what raw materials were brought in and that is only a portion of it.
I almost forgot Shiitake and Oyster are grown different than Portabellas and whites.The Shiitake are grown from logs Oster mushrooms are hung and grow from bags that have some typ of compost inside the bags and has holes and they grow and look like oyster shells growing from the holes .
