I've heard that from other knitters in our area. One gal was making homemade knit socks over the holidays and was selling them for $6.00/pair (sorry, but I'm not sure of the conversion for you), which I thought was expensive. They were absolutely beautiful, thick and warm, and I had to buy a pair! They were going to be a Christmas gift for someone, but I ended up keeping them for myself instead! She said that her cost barely covered the cost of the yarn and that she had to charge that much. There are quite a few knitting shows on TV now and it's giving me the itch to learn. My Mom tried to teach me crochet, though, and everything I made looked so tense and uneven
Thanks all. CP, come on over. You spin, I'll knit. Kaseylib, that is not expensive for a pair of home made socks, not here anyway. The evenness comes with practice in both knitting and chrocheting. I've got my knitting English polished, and the pattern on the hat is knit two rounds, then knit two, purl two for two rounds until you've got the required length, and that's it.
It's a deal! Before my brain blew up I used to actually be a pretty good crocheter. I still have a couple of hats I made, I'll see if I can dig them up to post them. I am simply unable to stop fiddling with things, so they are beaded and my favorite, a beret, has a band of Suri around the edge, with brown llama snitched from a rancher-friend for the main part... o poo, I'll just have to find the silly thing. Hopefully I'll remember when I have time to breathe!
I love circular needles, they are much easier to use and make the knitting go so much quicker. Thanks, CraftyGardener. Toni, that coat looks lovely! Which colour are you knitting it in? I'd be lost without the circular needles, especially when making sweaters with lots of pattern. And the hats too, by the way. I have to switch to four needles when finishing the hats, but that's a minor inconvenience.
Not sure about the color yet. Her favorite color is blue, so I was thinking about a dark heather looking blue or possibly a tan so she could wear it with more other colors. But with her bright red hair she does look in some dark greens and rusts but then I get back to how many times could she wear a color like that, maybe I should stick with a neutral.
Beautiufl work Droopy. I have not knitted a lot. I prefer to crochet - it seeems to work up faster for me.
