Problems with no sound on XP. I located a posting from Frank and followed the instructions:
    >Start
    >Open control panel
    >Open System
    >Open Hardware tab
    >Open Hardware Device Mng

I followed the above to find a RED X beside the USB Mass Storage Device (Device Mng.) I then unchecked the Red X and returned to find a yellow exclamation mark. Should this be deleted without causing harm? As you can see, i know very little when it comes to pc.
I have a Realtek HD audio Manager that came with my pc. Have gone through this and there are no 'mutes' checked off.
Thank you all for any assistance that can be given.

Hi bluewillow, welcome to GardenStew. At first glance I would assume that the problem in Device Manager is not related to your audio problem. 'USB Mass Storage Device' would be related to a USB thumbdrive or a USB external hard drive. Is this the only entry listed as problematic in Device Manager?

I would not advise that you remove the yellow exclamation mark entry.

Have you a pair of speakers hooked up to the computer for sound? Are these working properly? (you could test them on a friend's computer) Have you a headphone socket on your computer into which you could test the sound with a pair of headphones?

One time I had trouble with my sound, and the sound card had gone bad.

    Thank you for your help.
I do believe the problem is connected within the Realtek HD Audio Manager although I have never taken advantage of this device. I have gone through Realtek so many times and all mutes are unchecked. All was running well until I began exploring Realtek last evening. I'm a newbie and ought to know better.
As well, i have done two system restores hoping but alas.
    Thanks all.

Is it possible to re-install the Realtek HD Audio Manager application? Do you have the installation discs for the software that came with your computer?

I do have all data that came with PC ... now I will have to get up the courage especially when I really do not know what I am doing. Thank you so much for all of your assistance. Dreadful being in the PC world without sound but for the odd rumble from the 'tower'.
    Thank you again.

I've been told that it isn't my speakers but "the drivers and installing/uninstalling the sound max omponent".
I have looked into the add/remove secion and see that I do have "High Definition Audion Driver Pkg. KB888111" along with "Realtek HD Audio Mng"
Wondering if I could uninstall one or both and attempt to reinstall (will google for a Realtek download if this is possible).
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you all again.

    bw :-?
