I stumbled onto this site while searching for plants that butterflies like :) You can order butterfly eggs (I think its just Monarchs) and theyll send some milkweed along with em :) They also sell butterfly-friendly plants and other garden stuff :)

July is a long way off but I guess then it will be the height of your summer season. It just has to be a real interesting experience. Raising 'insects'.
Gosh Bip - you are really going to try this!!?? It is such a long wait to start.

I remember back in elementary school, someone brought in a caterpillar theyd found, so we raised it as a class and when it became a butterfly (I think it was a Monarch), we released it near the school :)

I wanna do that again, only have them near my house :D

    Raising Butterflies

    Hi,

I raise Monarch Butterflies here in Minnesota. I have been doing this for several years. It is easy!

Basically you just need to plant Milkweed. Don't plant Common Milkweed as it sends underground runners and shows up everywhere! I would suggest Swamp Milkweed (a pretty Perennial) or start some Tropical Milkweed (annual except for warm Southern states) from seed right now. It is very easy to grow (needs warmth to germinate)....the Monarchs love it (the leaves for laying eggs and blossoms for nectar).

It is a great hobby and fun summer activity!! Kid love it.

    Enjoy!

    Karen

That's so cool! I went to a butterfly exhibit in New York once and thought it was so cool. I even saw one hatch out of a cocoon.
