Lucky you to have some nearby. I just brought a book home from the library today called "How to Find Morels...even as others are coming back empty-handed". We were lucky enough to have some show up in the shredded bark mulch that was delivered two years ago, but it never came back last year.

wow , the absolute ONLY thing i miss about the Midwest is morel season. are those wild or cultivated? i see they are now selling kits to allow you to cultivate morels at home. beats the $29/lb they charge at the stores down here in NC!!
    nicely done!

    Sorta like lobster, Toni.
They grow at the place my family homesteaded, but I'm much more into the tiny wild blackberries. Grandma used to harvest morels, and showed me pretty much everything edible out in those woods, guess she learned all about it in the Great Depression.
    Congrats on your great find!

    Thanx everyone!
We found 29 yesterday, not bad for the first day IMO
The kits are questionable I've got one in a good area for Morels and it's been treated like the directions said. 2 yrs and still waiting. It may take upto 3 yrs to establish itself.
The one in the pic is wild, we have about 65 acres of woods as our back yard!!!! All private land.
I don't really think they taste like lobster, the Hericium (also known as Lions Mane) does though. I can't really say they taste like anything but a Morel. Kind of a light woodsy flavor and butter!! lol My wife uses Drakes mix for breading them and that's the only way she'll eat em. But she never ate shrooms till she got with me! (poor gurl.....putting up with me)lol

Oooo are they less woodsy/muddy tasting than the little white mushrooms you buy at the stores? I dont know the name.. most commen i think? being pregnant, i have come to dislike the taste of those particular mushrooms and am sad by that as i use to LOVE them! only mushrooms that grow around here, are on the manure piles and wild unedible ones. ):

I worked for Monterey Mushroom Inc.For over 8 years.I love the whites deep fried also the silver Oyster ones and the Ports grilled .I do not like the taste of the yellow oyster or the shiitake. The shiitake is a woodsy taste I can't handle.I would love to try the morels.
The plant is huge and they grow Whites Potabellas ,oyster and use to grow shiitake.
