Okay I'll give it a shot here. I pick my rosehips from a bush we call Stein Nyppe. What you do is wait for the rose to fall off. If you pick the roses you will not have any hips. So let the rose petals fall off and wait... thats it.

When the nyppe or little ball of the rose forms it will be green, now you have to wait again. When it turns orange its okay to pick. I wait until mine turn red, or deep red is even better, but by then you really have to keep an eye on them because the sun will turn them fast. For me here in Artic Norway this happens around Dec. There where you are, the sun is stronger than here, so it could be anytime the bush decides to drop the petals. You just have to wait and see.

As far as the seeds go, once you have a hip, cut it in half. inside is the seeds and they are like seeds covered with fiberglass. pretty hairy really. take those out, and put in a container or bag and freeze for about 3 months. If you don't do this they won't bloom for you. Also because the seeds won't be true to the mother plant herself, you have to plant alot of them together to get them to germinate. I usually plant about 10 in a pile. guarenteed something is going to pop up. But make sure you freeze them first, that is the most important thing.

The hip part can be eaten raw or fresh, or dried and used in tea, make infusions, use in baking, jams, preserves, candied hips, conserves, or just plain used in a salad. loaded with vitiman C.

    Good Luck!!!

If someone did not want to eat the rose hips raw, their local herb and vitamin store would carry them pre-packaged in tablets or capsule form.
