Here on the South Plains of West Texas, we got 8 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Flooding is occurring and the ground is saturated. This is the most rain ever recorded here. Schools are closed, businesses opening late. It's a mess. No damage at my house. Hoping for it to dry up. And this is not related to hurricane Ike. This came from the Pacific over the Southwest.
It has stopped raining here, but we have a 50% chance of more - not 8 inches, I don't think, but more. My yard was under 2 inches of water when I went out to check if our guest house was leaking (it wasn't!). The rain today seems to be mostly to our East just off the caprock (big ol' plateau on which I live). We do not get flooding like some places and I don't think it's really possible due to the relatively flat terrain. The entire South Plains slopes 8 feet to the Southeast every mile. The only places that flood are low-lying spots. The sandy loam soil we have causes it to soak in pretty quickly. Now, some man-made things flood pretty bad. Several years ago, we had big rains & the playa lakes drainage system was overwhelmed. One of the playa lakes sat right next to the apartment complex my sis-in-law managed. The water came up & into her office. She & others were hauling stuff upstairs to get it away from the water and she saw FISH swimming in her office!! In dry West Texas - a flood causing fish to swim in a person's office. Never would've though that could happen! By the way, the city of Lubbock spent millions fixing this drainage problem. We'll see if it worked now, huh?
Good to know that Lubbock finally worked on that drainage problem. I lived out there in 64-67 and there didn't appear to be a drainage system out there then, streets always flooded and underpasses became really deep lakes.
My ex and I lived in Shallowater for a few months then moved into Lubbock. Bought a house at 5011 48th street the year before my first daughter was born but then moved back to Dallas in Nov 67. I don't remember ever paying attention to the population of the city when I was there.
Thats a lot of rain but we are looking for lots of wind and rain here.Ike is to come right over us here so I really don't know whats going to happen.Possible 60 miles an hour winds gusting to God knows what.It may be higher winds .It is following a line of I-45 Interstate they say.I live about 4 or 5 miles from it.They say we will get the front and back of the eye.
toni, was 48th street near the South edge of town back then? When I got here, 82nd street was a dirt road. Now,it's a huge thoroughfare and the city extends South to 114th street & beyond. It is growing West, Southwest & South mostly, but Shallowater is fast becoming a part of Lubbock. Glad I live in Idalou - Lubbock is not moving this way.
48th street was almost at the edge of town. I think there were a few new housing developments going up south of 50th. Isn't 50th a large thoroughfare? If so, that was pretty much a new road when I was there.
Yes, 50th street is a thoroughfare. It is now the center of town. Most development is out near Wolfforth - and there's no expanse of farmland between Lubbock & Wolfforth now - the two seem to be one and Frenship ISD is HUGE now. They gotta build a new school every couple of years. Texas Tech has 30,000+ students and is aiming at 40,000. It has changed quite a bit, I guess, since 1967.
