It was the end of the work day and the new stone cutting scribe was tired and wanted to get home to his family and a good meal. The calendar he was chiseling in the giant stone had some additions to be made but they could wait until the two days of rest were over. So what if the boss was in a hurry, the scribe had been working on the latest addition of the Mayan calendar for weeks and a couple of days would not make any difference. A day later the Chief stone cutter walked into the workshop,'Well,' he said, 'I guess the new scribe is finished with the calendar, it's about time'. With enormous effort the slaves rolled the great stone calendar to the Mayan temple where the priests were very pleased and praised the chief stone cutter for such fine work. When the scribe arrived back at work after a two day rest the unfinished calendar was no where to be seen. The chief stone cutter told the lowly scribe that he better not take so long on the next job or it would be his last. The scribe thought best not to mention that the calendar was not finished. The great stone remained in the temple, unfinished, to be copied by others not so versed in the keeping of time. Centuries passed, civilizations turned to dust as they faded from memory. So it was with the Mayans. Now the world waits and watches for the pending doom as 12/21/12 arrives, all because a tired scribe wanted to get home to a good meal. Today we are so literate and create so much data that such an event could never happen. Unless……. Fast forward a few thousand years The archeologist's assistant gently brushed aside the layer of dirt, a dull disk came to light. Look professor!! An ancient data disk, still intact! So few have survived from that time period……I wonder what it says. I can still see some of the Identifying marks…… Something, something L E N D….something R. The first character may be an O or a C………. Jerry
Darn that lazy Mayan! I thought the world was going to end today, so I didn't clean the house or do laundry. Rats! Well, back to the same old everyday grind since there is going to be an everyday. . . .
Typical!! Just when I thought I'd get out of cooking Christmas dinner this year. That scribe has a lot to answer for. I'm glad I didn't max out our credit cards though.
