I have seen this since I was a child, I think it smells like honey. It has a very sweet odor to it. I have never been able to ID it. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what it is? I have looked and looked and still can't find a photo of it. It grows in the field across the road and when I was growing up it was in the horse pasture. weed ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) weed foliage ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) weed ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) weed... The only thing that comes to mind is that the leaves remind me of our Sassafras tree. Not much help, I'm afraid. I'll be watching closely to see what it turns out to be.
Sorry I'm absolutely no help, but I just wanted to say it is so pretty! Best looking weed I've seen in a while
It reminds me of callirhoe. We call it wine cups. I've only seen it in purple shades but the leaves even look similar. Maybe somehow related.
Are wine cups a member of the mallow family? Is that what you are referring to? They look somewhat like hibiscus. I keep looking on line and I seem to be getting nowhere with a couple of the weeds I have here at home. I just want to know what they are called.
Maryann, I looked that up and none of the flowers "fit" this plant. You are right, they come in the purples. WINNER....WINNER....WINNER.... But you got me started in the right direction.... It is called FLOWER OF AN HOUR and it is in the same family. So Thank you!! certainly not a name I would have been looking for.
And it is in our data base but needs more plant information and a photo or two added. hint, hint, hint. Hibiscus trionum
Wow! That was a good mystery and you solved it! And now there is a photo for the Plant Stew too. The flower does look a lot like a hibiscus.
Carolyn, thanks for all those photos. It's great to have some of all parts of a plant for easier identification when needed.
Toni, You are welcome, I went out as soon as you hinted that we needed these on the plant ID section. And since the flowers are only open for a very short time, and I had church to get ready for, I got it done right away.
Today as I sat down to look at my new magazine (birds and blooms) there in the "glad you asked" page was a picture of this very same plant we have been dithering over for the past few days. They also called it Venice mallow.
