After 20 days straight of temps over 90º (and longer than that without rain!) we finally got that mythical wet stuff! We beat the all time record streak of 19 days initially set in August 1936. Yesterday, I was out in the garden center. The sky started to turn grey, but since we've had cloudy days recently, I didn't think anything of it. The a breeze started. And it got stronger. I thought to myself that maybe we'd get something! So after running out to my car to make sure the windows were up (they were, thanks to my bf who rolled them up when he got back to work after lunch), when I got back to Garden, it started drizzling, then thunder and a bit of lightning :O I rushed to get the fan covered with a trash bag (it was an indoor fan, so the motor was not well protected) and to get the PIN pads under cover and to roll down the doors protecting the registers. When there is lightning, the cashier needs to close Garden and get inside. The main door consists of 2 large gates that are closed with a steel bar and a padlock. I went to close them, and discovered that the Zach, the DH (department head) who opened them this morning had locked the padlock, and I couldn't get the gates properly closed up! I was pacing back and forth, getting drizzled on (the rain was blowing in because we only have a chain-link fence around the place instead of proper walls) and trying to figure out what to do! I should've paged for someone to get out there, but I wasn't thinking >_< But luckily, Zach came out and I immediately said "The lock is locked!" and gave him a "look" lol So he went to open the padlock, I moved a flat-cart of tree roses away from the doors and he got them closed while I headed inside. As I made my way past the entrance door, I saw that the rain had decided to come down in sheets! You couldn't even see through the windows it was pouring so hard! Of course, everyone in the store had to run to the front and stand outside (under the overhang) and talk about how rainy it was LOL It only rained for about 15 minutes, but I know my plants were singing praises to the sky! After it was all over, I went back out to Garden, and had to do a bit of cleanup work. The wind had knocked over quite a few of the plants, flowers, shrubs and trees. Picking them up caused the wet foliage to swish water all over me Today, I am at home while the water pours outside Glad the water didnt get any higher! ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden ) This display shed had been totally and completely blown apart. Some of the pieces were found in the field you see behind the shed ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden ) Of course the plants that get broken the easiest (coneflowers adn rudbeckias) got totally knocked down... ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden ) And an hour later, you wouldnt even know it had so much as sprinkled... ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
Twenty days straight without rain - gosh over here in Scotland it's just the opposite. Twenty days of rain and two of sunshine is more out norm. I'm glad you got the rain you needed for your garden Jen. It's just a pity the display shed and the plants suffered from the winds and the centre. Let's hope you have more of the wet stuff from now on but maybe not quite so heavy and all at once.
Great story Jen, rainstorms are great to watch if you are not hurrying to prepare for a downpour and a curse if you can't move fast enough. As an adventurous 7 year old I was once caught unaware of a pending deluge of a summer storm while sitting on top of a street sign. In 15 seconds nothing was dry. Jerry
I am glad you got some of the rain too. It was a dark and stormy night here last night. We had severe thunderstorms and over70 mph winds, and the power was knocked out. Our power was out from around 8 pm to about 4:30 am, but others had to wait much longer to get theirs back on. My bench arbor was knocked over backward, and I have a lot of branches down. My neighbors had a tree fall into a mobile home of theirs. No one was in it or hurt though. My plants are happy as a clam with all the rain we have been getting this past week. I havent had to water since last week.
It's been almost a year since we had a good thunderstorm in my part of the world. The Monsoon season (which is what we call the rainy season over here in Pakistan) started in early June. But cloud have so far only passed over us, and not a drip of rain. Soon the Monsoon season will come to an end, at the conclusion of this month. So if it still does not rain, than will have to wait for next year...
Got another sprinkle today, and a double rainbow! The bf took this pic while at work. I saw it at home but my camera didnt pick up the faint 2nd rainbow well enough (this pic is actually the best lol) ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
Still a great photo. There's always something magical about a double rainbow. And congrats on the rain too!
Great to hear that it rained again and I can see the second rainbow though, very faint. Rainbows are the happy part of rain storms. Jerry
