The aura of newness has long worn off the mounds of white. They are now tarnished with black flecks of detritus from nearby trees. They are slowly withering with the ever lengthening day. Still, the backyard snow has a long way to go till the ground makes an appearance. Even longer till the ground accepts the blade of a trowel, much less a seed for a new plant. The calendar may announce spring on the 20th of March but the ground in much of New England says otherwise. And so the countdown begins...... Anybody have a spare 80° day? Jerry
We are almost bare here. Just a few small patches where we shoveled out and piled it up. Those will probably be totally gone by this evening as we are to get showers today. Tues. they say we could see 65 deg.
We've had a week of sunshine and warmer temperatures, but I think there is still more than 27.5 inches out there. A day of rain would work!
The only problem with a day of rain is the ground is still frozen, and that water has to go some where, So they have localized flood watches out. But with most of the snow gone, that's not quite as much water to run off. The last prediction I saw was about 1/4 inch of rain.
It is depressing to see so much snow, especially in March. The only consolation I can offer is that it will melt. P.S. I thought I would add that we have had an unusual winter as we normally get a lot of snow and we've gotten very little BUT we have had the -0 degree weather. I'm worried that I am going to lose some plants without the protection of snow.
What is so depressing is that next week they are saying a chance of snow the day after Spring arrives! Now that is the real March Madness!
My goodness we are to get another blizzard with up to another foot of snow. With the snow we already have we just might reach 9 feet before spring! However with the longer daylight hours and if we get days of fog it seems to diminish quickly. Fog seems to eat it up quicker than the sun or the rain. Bring on the fog as I am so tired of snow, snow and more snow! I'll bypass spring about now. Just give me a huge chunk of summer.
The rain moved out this morning and the skies cleared and we made it to 60 deg. F. That deserves a big ole smile!
Our snow is gone...maybe some left in what were big piles where the plow piled it up....we can get more snow but at least it won't last long. Good Luck with melting snow everywhere....Jerry, it will all melt eventually and I do know how dirty looking it can get....some years it is black after it sits for a while...
