Rocket or roquette, this is a delicious herb eaten as a salad. If my taste bud did not fail me I think I first had this herb during my last visit to Bangkok. It was just served plain on top of a pizza and in my caption of the photo I wrongly named it "arrow" .... Anyway we bought it and had it as a salad with olive oil and parmesan cheese yesterday and the taste reminded me of what we had in Bangkok. Now I want to plant rocket even though this is the second time I'm eating it cause I love it. Has anyone planted it before, is it a easy herb to plant and what are the conditions needed? Any info would be most appreciated, thanks.
I know it as Arugula. We grow it in our veggie garden. It's in allot of the prepackaged salads I see at the stores. Good stuff that Arugula is.
Thanks Barb, I wouldn't have correlated the two as one. Kk, I have grown it when it was in a mixed "lettuce" seed packet. I think I have a little bit out in the the one the one patch right now. There is nothing different about growing it as opposed to lettuce. You may find your climate too hot though. Try it and see. Plant it where it will get afternoon shade or grow it with a shade cloth over it. Is the taste a very strong pungent, peppy, bold taste? That is what the arugala is for me. not a mild greens leaf.
KK, I have arugula/roquette in our garden and it thrives. It's the first up and the last to go with a freeze. It is the one green that makes it through our hot summer, although it tends to get tougher and bitter (but the chickens still like it). I think you will be able to grow it easily.
Barb it is really yummie stuff but it is so expensive to buy it here and it is only available in one supermart here. Wish I can grow them here but first I have to get the seeds! Carolyn, you just reminded me of my experience with romaine but I will still give it a go if I can get the seeds. Hmm... ya maybe I can get it when I go to Australia next year The taste to me is not very strong but a pleasant peppy yummie taste. Thanks for the tips too. Thanks for the info marlingardener, I'll try planting it during the rainy season if there is really one now a days.... sigh!
We get it in grocery stores in many different ways. Fresh heads (of sorts) on ice, mixed in assorted greens prepackaged, and at the moment you can get 4 different kind of whole heads pack together for you to clean and mix as you like, one being Arugula.
Barb you are making me hungry for rocket/arugula, here we only get it in individual leaves. I think I should go down to the supermart and get it for lunch with honey glazed ham now baking in the oven!!! Yum-yum!!! Join me? :-D
