It's hard to beleive that it's been 5 years already since the attack on the World Trade Center and Washington. Fox News and I imagine all of the news stations are covering the Memorial Services this morning. As far as I know, I didn't know anyone that lost their life in these attacks. But I do remember exactly where I was at and what I was doing that morning. I had gone into town and went to the hardware store. On the way home, I heard about the first plane hitting the 1st tower. And just as I pulled into our lane, They said that a second one had hit the 2nd tower. I knew then that it wasn't an accident.
Five years went fast. I was in college at the time and one of our lecturers informed us that the first plane had struck. I heard shortly afterwards that a second had then struck. I rushed home to watch it on the news which was like a movie.
I had been watching Good Morning America when they began reporting on what appeared to be a small plane crashing into the first tower....and was watching the live feed from a police helicopter in the air and saw the second plane hit the other tower. Other than total disbelief, I remember thinking that was no cargo plane because there were windows down the side and that meant there were people on board. I could barely speak after that when I called Randy at work to tell him. He is a Federal employee and the word came down to all the Federal offices that every one was to go home immediately incase any thing like the Oklahoma City bombing had been planned to be part of this.
Our son was around 10 months old and daughter was just 2, so we were at home. Here in the UK, it was shortly after lunch, and the phone rang, my mum telling me to turn the TV over, and I should phone a couple of my New York mates to check they were okay. I worked for 10 years in the record and film business, and we had offices not far from the Twin Towers. I have been up them several times when in NY for different reasons. Our friends company had offices in one of the towers and he was often over there in meetings. Thankfully, he was home that day. To this moment, it still seems unreal to me....these things don't happen for real do they?....where is Bruce Willis? The other evening my darling and I watched a documentary about 9/11, interviewing survivors, reliving their stories. They showed the live footage of those souls who knew that there was no where to go, and decided to take their own lives. I cried. I cannot imagine what their minds and hearts went through, the fear, the realisation. And the passengers on the aircrafts - to see their deaths ahead of them...sorry for rambling but it was an event my mind struggled with and I find hard to put into words my thoughts about it. To those who lost their lives, and their families and friends, to those firemen who lost their lives in the line of duty, you will never be forgotten.
EJ I couldn't put it into better words than you already have. I'd just like to add my thanks to all the paramedics, policemen and women and the staff of all the hospitals that the injured were taken to. Without all the help you gave on that day and all the days afterwards there would have been more greiving families today. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL
As each of you said I will never forget that morning 5 yrs ago.I had worked all night and was asleep when my supervisor called and told me to turn the tv on .I was watching not long after the 1st plane hit and then I didn't believe what they were saying about another plane flying in toward the other tower and then it hit. It just doesn't seem real I know it was . Since that time the heros that breathed all those fumes, dust and everything are now very ill. Thanks to all that helped and also to the heros that lost their lives trying to help. GOD BLESS EVERYONE and the families that gave their all.
