Had a great day yesterday. Along the back of our allotment site runs a small stream...well, a ditch to be honest, fed by the natural springs on Danbury and Lingwood common which our site sits in the middle of. The ditch used to span the road, an unmade road, and over the years, the weather and cars have made crossing the ford rather dangerous so finally the council agreed to divert the water from ontop of the road, to under, through a big pipe. They also suggested clearing the ditch through the allotment so the water flows more freely, giving us better access to water on our site. However, as the ditch was completely overgrown, the council didn't have funds for the clearing part of the job, so a gang of us allotmenteers volunteered to clear it, and we spent the day yesterday up to our armpits in brambles, mud, stinging nettles and water. However, it was a lovely day, we cleared the entire ditch and found some odd rubbish which went to the dump. The highlight of the day for me was our lunch. I had purchased a little disposable BBQ and we fired it up by our shed and the children and I wandered around the plots deciding what to cook - if only our sweetcorn were ready. However, with our sausages, we had grilled onions, courgettes and tomatoes and they were devine. The kids tucked in and we had such a giggle. I think Mark took some pics, so I will download them later. Such a lovely day, so much achieved and good, clean (well muddy) family fun.

I'd love to have been there helping with the ditch clearing EJ. It sounds just like the most fun way to spend a day and you're even allowed to get muddy!! ;)
Isn't it amazing how, after lots of hard work, eating a BBQ outside tastes like the best meal you've ever had? So glad you all enjoyed your day and let's hope you won't suffer for it tomorrow.

That sounds good. Does this mean that you will have a water source, of sorts, now?
I was looking on google maps to see if I could see your allotment, but I did not have any luck.
That BBQ sounds liker a high point to me as well... :p

We have water on the edges of out allotment complex as well, but it our responsibility to keep it clean. The council comes by and checks and if it isn't clean on the day of inspection then the club gets a heafty fine.

What a fun day that sounded....everyone working together. Great allotmenteering!

    Well done, you.

Sounds like you and the kids had a fun day Emma and a very satisfying one as well. The BBQ sounds yummy, great to just pick and cook....tastes so much better.
NB: I don't think I would like to have cleaned your bathroom after the big clean-up though :D
