Here in my corner of north-eastern Australia there is a large flock of these beautiful but rowdy birds living in amongst the foothills. Sulphur Crested Cockatoo ( photo / image / picture from Bernieh's Garden ) The Sulphur Crested Cockatoos can be seen flying around this area every day and they most certainly can be heard! Their squawking echoes up and down the little valleys here intermittently all day long. But then, just before sunset in the evenings, the entire flock of around 30 to 40 birds, will fly over my house all screeching and squawking as they head over to their roost for the night in the tree tops just a little further down the valley here. The noise is deafening to anyone who's visiting for the first time. For us it's just background noise now. We're so used to the sound and when I hear it I know it's time to go out and handwater the potted plants before the night draws in. Sulphur Crested Cockatoos ( photo / image / picture from Bernieh's Garden ) I'm including my blog post I did all about these gorgeous birds for my own blog. If you're interested, go down to the bottom of the post and find the video clips. You will get the Cockatoo Chorus! Gorgeous fotos of these birds. i remember the great flocks of these birds and the noise that they can make. I didn't think that it was too bad, though. I used to watch them earing flowers of a gum tree in one camping place, the Gallas were also present in other parts of Oz and I found them and their acrobatic tricks a pleasure to behold. Your country is such a wonderful place for a person who is swept-away with natural wonders and nature. I shall never forget it. great posting this time. I shall have a look at the link now.
Marlingardener, that's just so true! Some of our most beautiful birds like the Rainbow Lorikeet have the shrillest of voices! These Cockatoos are so very noisy when they're on their own, but when they get together it's such a raucous din.
Sjoerd, these Cockatoos are rather cheeky little monkeys too. They do indeed get up to all sorts of antics. I rather enjoy having them round. We are definitely so lucky with the variety of birdlife we see here.
I think I'll stick with our 'dawn chorus' which is delightful to hear instead of the raucous calls of parakeets and cockatoos. However, I wouldn't mind having some exotic birds dropping in here every now and then. We do get the odd budgie or parrot that's escaped but that's about it. Thanks for the lovely photographs of your 'common' birds. :-D
