Well, ice rain and ice storms are new to me growing up in the Uk, But we had a mini ice storm over the weekend here in Montreal Canada. So I decided to take the camera out and see if i could get some good shots with the ice on trees and plants. Also gave me a chance to play with shutter speeds.

I'm not sure the name of these weeds, but do know they stick to trousers and Cats like super glue.

Another of the local weeds this one has large pods that produce a cotton like seed that blows away. But has an interesting shape

Ice rain? Is it the equivalent of sleet? Or hail? This is new to me too. Nice shots Danjensen.

Milkweed is the primary food of the Monarch Butterfly caterpiller. They lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves.

Frank, I think Dan is referring to freezing rain. The atmosphere is warm enough to rain, but the surface that the rain falls on is below freezing. This produces an enormously dangerous condition outside. Everything is coated in ice. roads, trees, cars, etc. No traveling unless it is an emergency, basically. The last 5 years, or so, have produced a few freezing rain storms every winter. I dread this forecast.

A couple of years ago we had storm with freezing rain through the night that, at 3 O'clock in the morning, limbs of trees could be heard breaking at the rate of more than 2 a second. An erie sound and devastating for trees and bushes.

The chain saws are still running around here cleaning up from our ice storm. The ice was spectacular, but having trees cracking, popping and breaking all around you is a bit daunting. Some people were without power for 10 days because of trees falling on power lines or power poles and knocking them down and some much to repair.

I love your last photo :stew1:

thanks all glad you liked the shots,

I had hoped someone would know the name of the last one. Was lucky to see a field of them last fall when they were all seeding an amazing site. especially as my garden was no where near :stew1:

Hey frank as Carolyn says, Must admit i didn't know freezing rain existed until i moved out here. I'm amazed at the weight it puts on the trees and how well they recover. below is a picture of two silver birch we have at the back, for scale they are normally upright to about 2 stories. And were almost bent double.

They're all very nice photos, but the winter berry one is my favourite. I think it's very classy indeed. :D Ain't nature wonderful, even at it's worst?

Great pictures. We had ice storm few years ago in Feb. We cut lot of fire wood. And like I post before only reason we kept some of our trees. Jerry hooked up hose to warm water and melted ice off them. But after 10-100 year old year old tree taken down from straight line winds. Wasn't giving up with out a fight.

Wonderful photos of the ice storm. I particularly enjoyed the silver birches, hope they do not suffer permanent damage.
