Remember thepineapple that the monkey took a bite and left it because it was not ripe then? Just a couple of days ago when it was ripening, I decided that I would cut it in the evening and have it for desert after dinner with mixed feeling whether it was safe to eat it or not. I thought to myself that if it is OK inside, then I would eat it. While taking my afternoon siesta, I heard a commotion in the living room, my wife and daughter were excited about some activities going on in the garden. I looked out of the window and s#*t this is what I saw! Caught in action! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) Not one of them but a whole troop of them, some carrying their young. One was having a time of its life enjoying the now very sweet pineapple, some were eating the brinjals and long beans. I grabbed a broom and rush out trying to save the pineapple and it quickly gorge at the pineapple before making its escape. I guess the pineapple must be real sweet and juicy. Half Eaten! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) I could see the juice oozing out of the fruit and the smell the sweet aroma. Guess that answered my question to eat it or not! Jerry 'Monkey Guard Fencing Ltd.' is now building a proto type and will be testing it on the egg plant soon.
They must have known you were about to eat it and decided they'd make sure they got it first!! I hope, for future crops, you can devise a 'cage' or something to keep the wildlife at bay.
That monkey must have been in heaven Jerry. It quickly turned to hell when he saw the broom coming. Looking forward to following the progress of your monkey defense guard system.
I hope you can build a monkey proof cage. The picture of your pineapple had my mouth watering. It looked so juicy.
Thank you all, the next fruit is expected at least 12~16 months from now and I am sure I can come out with something to protect it ... I hope!
How did they know you were just about to harvest it? It sure looked delicious. Good luck with your monkey proofing. I grew a pineapple a few years ago and was really surprised that it bore fruit. Now that I have my winterhouse set up. I'm going to try another. There's no monkeys around here, but I do have those pesky racoons!
Cayuga Morning I thought that the sharp pointy leaves would keep those pesky monkeys away ... I was very wrong! Cherylad, I guess it was just a coincidence. Hope to see your pineapple soon!
What a shame! And it was such a beautiful pineapple too. Now that they know where the good stuff is, they may come back often to look for more. Good luck with your new fencing.
KK like the other have said---so sad that the monkeys got to the pineapple first. I love pineapple. You could try and put a couple of strands of wire around the plant hooked to an electric fencer one uses to keep cattle in a pasture. Works for our raccoons.
That's what I was thinking of,,solar powered electric fence. Easy to use and erect but just be sure you turn it off before trying to pick veggies and pineapple. Or,,,
Thanks for the suggestion Tooty2shoes, Mart. Sad to say we do not have these kind of contraption that we can buy off the shelf.
