This past Sunday my honey and I were sitting at the table having our breakfast. We love watching the birds in the feeder. When what to our wondering eyes should appear but TWO MALE PILEATED Woodpeckers. They had both landed on our maple tree that is only 15ft away from the bird feeder.
They we there and gone so fast all I could do is sit with my mouth hanging open in surprise. One proceeded to fly over to the old stump. The other one peaked around the side of the tree and was gone in a flash after the other male. Which it chased down the hedge row on the other side of our road out front.
You could have knocked me over with a feather. Of course NO camera. I can't wait to see what comes along next. :stew1:

I have seen one Pileated Woodpecker and only for the briefest of time. They are not too prominent around here and you saw two!! Wow! Bummer that you did not have your camera handy. Maybe they will come back. Do you put out suet for them?

Hello...when I had the pileated woodpeckers they always pecked on dead trees to get the bugs out. I had never seen them at my suet.

I remember the first time I had one fly over our country home...I told my husband it looked like a very large woody wood pecker (from the cartoon) flying in the sky and later to find out it was the pileated woodpecker. Every day in the woods in our backyard you could hear them pecking on the old dead trees, what an echo it made but it was one I really enjoyed and when you didn't hear it, you wondered where they were. I really miss that place with all the wonderful birds I had...

Jerry--I do have suet out but they don't come to it yet. I would faint if I saw one on our suet feeder as it is only about 2ft away from our bay window in the kitchen.

Sherry--- I had posted pic's of a male and female on the dead stump out in the front yard. That's where the one male flew off to. They have been working on the dead stump for some time and keep coming back. Yippy.
I don't always see them. But I can see the wood chips they leave on the ground so I know that they have been there.

Those birds are soo cheery, what a great Christmas present to see two of them.
We had a flock of trumpeter swans swimming by last week, so elegant and graceful, with a sunrise behind them with pink sky and mountains. Our camera did not have a picture card in it. My husband is going to get some of those little cards in his stocking from Santa this year.

It is nothing compared to pileated woodpeckers and trumpeter swans, but we had two ducks on our little pond this week. This is amazing, because the pond only recently filled from the rain we've received--before it was mostly mud flat. It was so comforting to see those little ducks swimming about!

Karrma- those would be neat to see also. Be sure you have a least a 2gb camera card. I can take over 300 pic's on my one card. I hate not having a camera when you need one.

Marlingardener- Glad to hear you have a pond again. Makes those little ducks very happy.

Seeing one Pileated Woodpecker must have been a wonderful sight and enough to get the pulses racing. However seeing two is simply magical!! :D
