And I'm not talking about my brother or his friends! It's one of the common names of my newest plant.... a Rangoon Creeper (Quisqualis indica). I was on an errand today and my truck turned right into this neat little nursery. :-D It must have known that I've been looking for a vine for my archway. I told the guy that I wanted a vine that would stay green year 'round and bloom year 'round. He laughed... "You know that ain't possible, right?" I said... "Yeah... just had to ask. So what kinda vines do you have that will give me blooms for a long time?" He shows me this "monster" of a vine. BEAUTIFUL! He explains that it does die back during the winter but resprouts from the roots, grows rapidly and gets huge. The one he had in the ground had to be 7 foot tall and 4 foot wide and was full of the most gorgeous blooms. He said it was 5 years old, but that's all new growth from this year. Okay... I was sold. It was pretty pricey by my standards (meaning it wasn't on a markdown rack for $2.00) But it was on sale. This is it planted near the archway. Rangoon Creeper ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And here's it's flowers. The are supposed to start off white or pale pink and turn red over a few days. Butterflies are supposed to love 'em. Rangoon flowers ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Oh yeah... they have a nice fragrance too!
Beautiful blossoms and plant. Ahem, did you know that there is only one photo of this plant but no info in our database? Quisqualis indica
Oh boy your Rangoon Creeper is going to look absolutely gorgeous when it climbs all over the arch. It's a lovely, healthy looking specimen and I hope it grows well for you and attracts lots of butterflies. What a bonus getting flowers that are scented too. You've made the perfect choice.
Thanks Hank. I owe it all to my truck for knowing when and where to go. :-D Toni... once it gets settled in and looking perky, I'll add some photos and information too from it's tag. Thanks Eileen. Yep... it's pretty healthy. I almost didn't have enough room for it in the cab of my truck.
Cheryl, I am sending my truck to you for "turning in at nursery" lessons. That is a great vine, and I'm so envious I could weep! Have you been contacted by one of the better gardening magazines for a photo shoot of your garden? If not, someone is missing a great opportunity!
Jane, I read that it starts easily from seed... so If I get some, I'd gladly share them. And please... my little ol' garden pales in comparison to most of the one's I've seen here.... your's included!
Cheryl, yes to the seed of you have some to spare, and NO a big NO to your garden paling in comparison. Your garden is superb!
Hi Cheryl, lol at your comment,..(Okay... I was sold. It was pretty pricey by my standards (meaning it wasn't on a markdown rack for $2.00) Laughing But it was on sale.) You do get the greatest bargains,..with the aid of that truck of yours,..but congrats on that Vine find,..lovely flower and an added bonus its scented, ,..some people have all the luck,.. ,..its going to look perfect around that Arch.
Philip... It may be the most I've ever paid for a single plant ($20). But what the heck... I've been wanting something besides the trumpet vine for that arch (since it's just not growing and or flowering fast enough for me). If this vine looks and performs half as good as the one they had growing, it will have been money well spent.
Hi Cheryl, once you feel you have found the right vine or plant,..the cost is almost forgotten and i feel you have got a winner there,..looking forward to seeing it grow and bloom for you.
