Hello everyone! I've been watching a particular volunteer plant to see what it might be. It came up beside a rose bush earlier in the season. I didn't know if it was a type of squash, or maybe a pumpkin.... Then, yesterday this is what I found! It looks like a watermelon. It's about as big as my thumb. I included a pic of the leaves. Is is a watermelon? Is there anything special I need to do for it? teeny tiny watermelon ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden ) The leaves on the "watermelon" plant ( photo / image / picture from daisybeans's Garden )
Well. You're right about that Toni! Not watermelon leaves... I've been googling gourds and gourd leaves.... possibility for sure. The leaves on my plant seem smaller than those in the pictures. We'll see!!! It's a fun surprise.
I think so too -- especially the more I look at different kinds.... and even more when I googled "baby gourds" -- the little fruit does look like a gourd. Very exciting! I didn't know some gourds are edible. I kind of hope it's not edible so I can let it dry and keep it! Thanks for the help, Toni and Glenda!
Daisy...I think that this could possibly be a Cucurbita moschata (butternut squash) plant. I hope that it is for you...because they have a 'different' sort of flavour--sort of sweetish. If it is the butternut, then it will eventually turn yellowish. I haven't grown this for three years, and I am not sure what a young one looks like anymore, but it is the first think that I thought about when I saw the foto. Keep us updated on this please.
