A hole in my ceiling, or let the light shine in....couldn't decide which was the better title. I am excited because we have two new skylights in our home. We had one put in the kitchen and one in the livingroom. They are not totally finished since they need a few more coats of mud before getting painted, but what a nice difference. Both skylights are small and face north, but the difference is remarkable. Don't need any electric lights on :-D There is definitely something special about natural light when you live in a cloudy, overcast part of the world. And then there was light ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Good sized hole ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden )
Jewell, I bet that is true about the importance of natural light in Washington state. Your skylights look beautiful! Here's to your enjoyment of them!!!!
I think your skylights are the ideal way to get natural light into your home. When the sun shines you'll also have the benefit of them warming the house up too.
I have a solar tunnel in my kitchen and love it!!! I'd love to put one in the hallway too! You will wonder why you didn't do it sooner!
Cherylad, they are certainly worth it. It only took us thirty years to realize we needed them and then another year to save up CM, yep I live in the cloudy part of the state, and what a difference. Eileen, I am curious to see how the temperature will differ through the seasons with them. Donna, we have only had cloudy days so far and the difference is amazing Stratsmom, would love to here more about your solar tunnels. Something in our narrow hallway and tiny bathroom is something I would love if they work well. I had heard both positive and negative things so would love to hear your opinion. Will have to start replenish ing the house piggy bank though.
Congratulations. You've done well! I've always wanted skylights since we're also living in a rainy, grey part of the world.
Jewell we have a skylight in our bathroom. Lets in great light, but also all the heat in that room goes up into the skylight. Then when it is really cold and we have had some REALLY below zero days. Frost forms on the inside of the double pane glass. Then when it warms up we get water dripping on the floor from said sky light. I hate stepping in water puddles in the middle of the night. I guess bathrooms are not a good place to have them from several articles I've read. Wish the previous owners would have known that before they put it in. I have been thinking of getting some plexiglass and making a wooden frame that would fit around the outside of the bottom of the sky light hole. Kind of like a big picture frame with the plexiglass on the inside. I would put some kind of foam insulation under the wooden frame before I attached it to the opening. That way it would work like a storm window does. But I do think skylights are a great way to bring light into ones home.
Thanks Tooty2shoes, the information will help. Fortunately we seldom if ever have to deal with the extremes in temperatures you do. I was thinking we would probably add extra insulation to tube portion of the skylight and your information confirms that it would be a good idea.
Looking very good, Jewell. It really ought to make a difference in the light level in your home during the day time.
