I am so delighted with my latest harvest.
As you know, I have been growing two types of tomatos in my greenhouse this year. Many of them are quite orange now...but I have harvested one--the Legend "beefsteak" tomato.

I recall that Carolyn and EJ are growing these this year, and perhaps others as well.
So, for those interested in knowing what to expect, here is a series of four pcs to show you what you will be getting.

First of all...my beefy friend still comfortably hanging on the plant:

Once home, I weighed it, out of curiosity. I was pleased with the weight.

Well, this Legend will not be going into a canning jar as concentrate, no sir!....it is destined to go straight onto my plate. But first, I sliced it in half because I want to show you how good this sort looks on the inside:

Finally as one of the constituents of my tuna salad meal. It looked lovely for a couple of minutes, then I tucked-in. Mmmmmmmmmmm :p

So Legend growers, this is what you are going to get, good luck there.

Oh, my doesn't that look delicious!

That weight is in grams, isn't it? If so that converts to 13.6 ounces for us over here. That's a huge tomato.

Hi TONI--Yes those are grams...and yes, it is a biggish tom. It is why I chose this sort--to be big for canning. It has a very good flavour for just eating, but I do prefer others. It's a matter of taste, I reckon.

Thanks, EILEEN-- Having such large toms makes canning concentrate quicker and gives you a lot in a hurry. Once I have enough I will then begin eating them on BLT's and sarnies. I hope that you do try them, they are easy to grow. i got the seeds from T&M over there.

Hi ya CAROLYN-- you are welcome. I thought that you might like seeing what a Legend looks like when ripe. (You did say that you were trying them for the first time, didn't you?). I hope that yours perform well for you, as I could imagine that they would do wall at the Farmers' Markets which you attend.

Thank You, PHILIP-- It truly was tasty. I did not eat the whole tomato that day, but rather finished it the following bone. Eating that first tom of the season is almost like a religious experience. chuckle. I usually just silently eat and take in the sensation of the flavour of the first tom, and try and recall how they tasted the preceding season.

CALIN-- Oh, me too! If you had one of these, you'd be in salad for 2-3 days!

I am not a tomato eater because they are always sour but I am impressed. Is it sweet?

KK, If the tomatoes you have are sour, try a pink tomato. We have grown Ultra Pink for 10 years or more. they are disease susceptible, so they require spraying with a fungicide, but they are very nice tomatoes. not sour and acidy. Mild and sweeter.

I usually have several varieties, this one as well. To me they are a bragging type tomato. Gotta have something to bragg about to fellow gardeners. LOL,! Yours is a beauty ! For flavor I prefer Homestead, a smaller variety but great taste! Arkansas Traveler also an excellent tomato.

Hee hee hee--You are a funny girl, NETTY-- Sorry for teasing, though. Well, if you already have green toms, it oughtn't to be too long before you get some red, right? Hang in there.

Thanks very much, KK-- well, not all toms are sour,as Carolyn said. Plus there is a whole range of "cherry tomatos" which have a sweetish taste. You ought to give them a try, if you can get the seeds.

MART-- it sounds like you are having some success with your toms there.

KK, try yellow cherry tomatoes. I grew sunsugar last year and lemon drop. The sunsugar is sweeter, but they both were excellent

You do love to show off don't you Sjoerd! :) Only teasing. My toms are still a couple of weeks away ripening as they are outdoors, so I will have to go looksie and see how they are swelling. Mmmmm...I surprised you went for a salad...it would have been a BLT for me. :)

hahaha...yes I like to show my toms, especially if I can make you jealous. :snicker: chuckle.

Yep, better keep your eye out for the blight. I expect to see signs here on my spuds any day now.

I didn't go for the BLT, because I like using the Ferline's for that.
I went out to the lottie and harvested in the rain today, as well as gave water in the greenhouse. I picked 10 Ferline's, I think it was.
Naturally I had to consume one on the spot.......quality control, don'tcha know. ;)
