As you may know; the Bride and I host boat tourists for coffee/tea and apple pie, for an hour one morning a week. Today was the last guest visit. We enjoyed it very much. During the conversation the metric system came up...and then temperature. One lady has been a grammar school teacher and she shared with us a little rhyme: 30 is hot, 20 is nice... 10 is cool, 0 is ice. Well, it isn´t meant as a conversion guide--rather a feeling of comfort indication. For anyone learning metrics or a language for that matter...it is a feeling for the concept that is of essence. For example if you learn the Dutch phrase, `te val met je neus in de boter´. Literally it means ´to fall with your nose in the butter´....but that is not the concept, the concept is ´to have unexpected good luck´. See what I mean? So, I thought that this retired schoolteacher came with a good method of conveying the concept of what the temperature numbers mean without converting them. Have you guys heard other helpful little rhymes?
I really like that Sjoerd and it's much easier to remember. 20 is my ideal or even 10 but I don't like it too hot or too cold. I always use this one to remember how many days each month has: 30 days hath September, April, June and November, All the rest have 31, Excepting February alone. Which only has but 28 days clear But 29 in each leap year.
I was just thinking of that rhyme this morning when I was counting the days left in April without looking at the calendar and when I came to 30 I remembered the rhyme that told me April just had 30 days. So, it's just 8 days left until May. dooley
This is a translation from a Chinese Foo Chow dialect which is taken from this Blog. The sun goes down by the side of the mountain Use sea water to fry vegetable, don't need salt Use good stone to sharpen knife, don't need water So, when a good son gets married, don't need money
How about "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning" Last nights sky was gorgeous shades of red and so I knew today was going to be a beautiful day
That's a good one, TONI. Faucets. Yeah...tyhat's a good one. Handy then wasn't it, DOOLEY. Well, KK--I think its fair to say that I have never heard that one. I like the last line. hahaha. Hiya NETTY--We have a slightly similar one here about sky redness. I'm enjoying reading these. Thank you all for adding them.
