The night before last was a little relief from the day extreme heat because there was a light shower. Without warning the night was lighted up by a super bright flash followed by a super loud crack and it was total darkness. The power had tripped and the rain got heavier and winds started to blow real hard followed by more lightning and thunder. It is no longer raining but it is a full scale thunder storm! When the storm passed, I had to check all the electrical apppliaces that were plugged in before storm is still functioning. Luckily the only thing that got fried was the modem. Next morning I was pleased that there were no damages in the mini farm but at the aquaponic station it was a different story. Romaines ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The peebles in the romaine bed that was planted that morning seemed to have moved to bury the seedlings. ??? ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) This one looks like it was sucked into the peebles. Taken a beating ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The lettuce had taken a real bad beating. Almost Destroyed ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) It looks like the peebles were also being tossed around. The other two beds were OK, maybe the plants were older so stronger. Anyway as of today the seedlings looks like they are recovering ...... I hope!
KK, as long as the gardener survived unscathed, the garden will recover, too! I do hope all your seedlings "get back on their feet".
It wood seem that the concussion of the lightning bolt was enough to cause some settling in the lettuce bed. Plants are resilient they will most likely recover. Was the pump O.K.? Too bad about the modem, was there a surge suppressor in the system? While I see a TV antenna on your house I do not see a lightning rod, is this a regular occurrence? Jerry
I'm glad your ok. This seems to be a nasty year for severe weather. I love a good thunderstorm. I'll stay out with the camera, a tripod, and a lawn chair filming until the last minute. Last year I stayed out a little too long and got wacked with hail. NOT FUN! I'm a bit more cautious now! Hope the weather clears up for you.
What an exciting tale, KK. I am glad that you didn't have any more damage than you did. Are modems expensive to replace there? I have a feeling that your plants will bounce back from their jostle.
They are looking much better this morning Cherylad, thanks. Thanks Marlingardener, so true indeed they are almost on their feet again. Jerry thanks, the pump is OK. I had a surge suppressor for most of my electrical appliances. In the case of the modem, I had the surge suppressor for the telephone line removed because because it was interferring with the internet. I guess the surge must have came through the telephone line. No we do not have a lightning rod and this is not a regular occurance. Thanks Carolyn, we are all OK and the plants are recovering too. Yes it was a scary experience. Thanks RJ, I don't like a thunderstorm but I used to stay out till the last minute like you but not filming instead playing golf even after the siren was sounded. After this experience I'm not going stay outdoors when there is a threat of thunderstorm! Thanks Sojerd, the plants look like they are bouncing back. Modems are not costly to replace here. I am using a wireless router modem and it cost RM120.
Hi KK Ng, glad to see your report that all is well,..no damage and it seems the plants recovered,..great things surge repressors,..when not removed of course ,..its hard to have every angle covered all of the time.
Im going to bet that theyll recover just fine. Theyre pretty resilient. That must have been a terrible experience though, very glad your ok and there doesnt seem to be much damage!
Sorry I had been busy for a while, anyway the seedlings had done really well. Romaines ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The romains are on their feet again fully recovered. Lettuce ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The lettuce are growing happily again and they had really grown. Yes Philip, thanks. It is indeed difficult to have every angled covered especially at all time. Thanks Sherry, everything had recovered including me from my recent over busy schedule! GMB27, thanks for your concern. Yes everything recovered and is in great shape. Well I guess next would be the most interesting part which is harvesting and eating it!!
KK, I was just wondering how your plants were doing and I didn't think to ask, silly of me, huh? :-? Glad to see they are doing so well.
Hi KK, your plants pictured are looking none the worse for the ordeal,..i can taste them!!,..as i am eating leaves from mine as they are growing.
