I do not normally eat raw pineapple in my homeland because 99.9% of the time it is sour and sharp. Whenever I visit Thailand I would eat as much pineapple as possible because they are sweet and heavenly to eat. Sometimes I wonder why nobody grew the same species here or is it just a natural thing that pineapples in Thailand are always sweet . Quite awhile ago, my wife's aunt gave her a pineapple and almost 90% of the fruit was sweet. With the help of our son she planted the crown ...... at that time I was very busy climbing the corporate ladder and was not interested in planting. Over the years we had eaten the fruits of this neglected plant a couple of times and it was really sweet but it was getting smaller and smaller. Neglected pineappple ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) It was in June 2008 when we had one of the fruit from the original neglected plant offspring and I was forced decided :-? by Rebecca (my wife) to plant the crown of that fruit in the mini farm. After a year and nine months plus minus a couple of days we were rewarded with a two and a half kilo or five and a half pounds very sweet and yummie fruits. I am really glad that I was forced decided to plant it :-D . My First Pineapple ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) 2.5 kg Wow!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) Upper is Lbs/Lower is Kg. ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) Nice, Sweet & Yummie!!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The Crown ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden ) The crown of this fruit is now planted in a pot to be given to a very close friend of ours when she come visit next. I still have another plant in progress. The original plant will soon produce a new shoot for another fruit soon. Yes yummie!! yummie!! :-D
Oh, what a gorgeous mass of pineapple chunks. Every time I go to the grocer store lately I think of the conversations on GS about pineapple and am really tempted to buy one so I can try growing my own. I love pineapple but it doesn't love me, the raw fruit really irritates the inside of my mouth. If I make a Pineapple Upside Down cake, it isn't raw and I can eat all I want.
My goodness I've never seen a pineapple quite that big before KK. :-D I'm so used to the pineapples we buy being sweet that I never, ever thought that any of them would be sour to the taste. I'm so glad yours is the sweet variety as you can now enjoy the fruits to the full. I've certainly learned something new from your post.
I'm sure glad you posted this... my pineapple plant didn't survive the winter and I've been meaning to start another. This definitely will get me to stop and buy one on the way home! I can just taste it now!
Welllllll, I had to go to the grocery store anyway for other stuff so I picked up a small pineapple and going to give this a try.
Me too Toni, I have one in my bowl right now and as soon as I eat it, I'm going to plant the crown too. I'll have to bring it in during the winter.
Fantastic. I can't wait for mine to be ready! It won't be anywhere near that size, but it is growing nicely - a few more sunny, hot days, and I reakon it will ripen.
That pineapple looks so delicious. I enjoyed seeing the pics and reading the stoty. What a reward for yoiur troubles, eh?
Thanks Toni and good for you for getting the pineapple. That's the way to go and I guess by now it should be planted. I used to eat it with salt to reduce the irritation in the mouth and that is what I meant by sharp. But with this fruit it was no problem at all. :-D Yes Frank this is the very same fruit that you saw and it tasted real good. :-D It started to ripen from last week so I have to harvest it. :-? Sorry I made some mistake with the dates when I told you that it might take about another 4 months . Anyway if you are in Thailand make sure you eat the pineapple there, they taste real good. Yes Glendann, it was really tasty. Thanks Eileen, lucky you to get sweet pineapples all the time. Here is like sour all the time. It took us more than two meals as a desert to finish it. :-D Haven't had so much pineapple after such a long time. Great Cherylad, if I can mail the crown to you I would. Daisybeans, I am sure by now you must have got yours planted too! Thanks Droopy, me too!! Thanks EJ, I am sure yours is going to be awesome too!! Thanks Sjoerd, it was real rewarding and with all the praises makes the 21months of weeding, watering and getting poked by the leaves all very worth it. :-D
wonderful pics and story kk! now i have to try it too! how big do the pineapple plants get? did you grow it in a pot or the ground? i don't think i've ever seen a pineapple that big before, also. beautiful!
Thanks Bunkie, yes you must try it!! :-D Mine is planted on the ground and it is slightly more than 3 feet in diameter. I think my plant is quite a large plant.
