I have a US Flag, that was flown over multiple bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was honored with this by a friend who was a Battalion commander EOD now retired.

Mrs. FBG thinks we should fly it. I think it should remain cased and preserved.

    What say ye?

Can you fly the flag on special occasions, like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and any other date that has meaning for you, if the weather permits? The flag could be carefully preserved between times.

I think you should fly it on the major holidays at least (weather permitting) and keep it in a case between times.

I think it should be cased and preserved. It's an honor to have it and know it's history.

Fly it on the Holidays that have meaning to the military, such as Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. And cased and displayed in a prominent place in your home the rest of the time. A plaque denoteing it's history would be very appropriate also.

I think it deserves to be protected/preserved.
You can always get another flag to fly on those special occasions.

Yes, it was an honor your friend bestowed on you. I don't know the etiquette but I personally would keep it cased and displayed.

I haven't been able to find any information in the U.S. Flag Code or various websites about Flag Etiquette that will answer your question. It looks like the decision is yours.

These guys http://www.flagguys.com/etiq.html will answer email questions about all things U.S. Flag (they do sell them but they have a great website with all sorts of information)

One thought I had ... the soldiers in those war zones fought and some died so that the flag will always fly proudly in a free country...does it honor them more to stick it in a case where it is seen by few or to fly it on special national holidays in their honor maybe with a plaque giving it's history.

When the flag is too worn to fly, then it could be encased and saved instead of being disposed of.
