Hi Loretta, the plant is an agave, they grow wildly on mediteranean coastlines.

Agave salmiana, they also grow in Mexico, Arizona and the Big Bend area of deep south west Texas.

Aloe and Agave are in different Families...Agave being in the Family Asparagaceae and Aloe in the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae. Aloe is native to parts of Africa and Agave is native to Mexico.

Yep, that's a flower stalk. After many years of growing this Agave sends up a flower stalk 20-40 feet tall with yellow flowers.

"asparagaceae" as in asparagus ? I have a bit of asparagus growing, but I never eat it. [I have on occasion, but no thanks. It is a pretty plant.]
