I started off about two weeks ago securing boats for friends or loosening ropes due to the river rising,..the river won,..most people removed boats from the river or lake as in the end there was nothing left to secure boats to. Since then its volunteer work filling sandbags,..coming home cooking a meal before i fell asleep on my feet,..once again the river won as 60 houses had to be evacuated and the river is still rising,..another gale is due in 48 hours with severe gusts and heavy rain. Philip I had a feeling you were going to be rather busy. I've been watching the floods in your area and hoping all was well with you. Molly doesn't seem to mind the rise of the river does she? I just hope that the weather starts to improve and that the flooding recedes. Those poor people who had to evacuate their homes!! It's been one of the most dreadful winters in living memory hasn't it? I really don't want to see any more rain now for at least a few weeks and then let it just be showers. Hi Eileen,..Molly thinks its heaven with so much water,.. but its so sad to see people having to leave their homes and so many animals drowned and stranded,..they just stand there bewildered. I have the weekend off and glad of it,..i was in bed most nights before midnight,..sometimes at nine or ten,..just tired out,..nothing more can be done to stop the water rising in my area as it travels from way up north down to us and more gales and rain on the way in 48 hours will be a disaster,..we have had rain for about three weeks with just a few mornings when it was calm,..sunny and no rain,..so Molly got her walks then. You are so right,..i don't remember it ever being as bad as now,..weather forecast gives us at least another week of rain and gales,.. well apart from aching muscles and being tired i feel great,..lost any fat i had lol.
Philip, I almost cried when I saw the pictures of the flooding! Please, please do not overdo with the sandbags and such--you are too important to Molly, the cats, your garden, and to your fellow Stewies! Mother Nature owes you a break in the weather, and I hope you get it soon.
It really is terrible isn't it Philip. My folks have not been hit too bad, thankfully they are not near any waterways. However their land is pretty much saturated by now which is never good for farmers. Please stay safe and hope you get adequate rest.
It's sad to see so much flooding. I still say we need a world-wide pipeline to move water from flooded places to those that are drying up. But I must say, even with seeing so much devastation, Philip... your pictures are beautiful. I loved the one with Molly with the stick. Only a water dog would be ready to play fetch in a flood. Please don't over-do it too much. And I hope the waters receed soon and the your neighbors didn't suffer too much damage.

Thanks for the posting and the descriptive pics. Living here under the sea level, I can all too well understand the feelings there. Without our dikes we would be inundated with water as well. It is sad to see. Your attractive foto's with blue skies and calm waters have such a misleading appearance. When I see them, I get a feeling of well-being, while I know that there are still submerged dwellings and broken hearts. But what a great guy you are---helping others with sandbagging and other things. I admire and respect humanitarian behaviour in whatever form it comes. Chapeau mate!

Incredible shots! But so sad. I'd tell you not to work so hard with this next round of gales, but I know that will fall on deaf ears. So just work smart, OK? As MG said, you're very important to a lot of people!
Hi Folks,..thank you for all the nice supportive responses. I had a great sleep from last night,..remained in bed up to 0900hrs this morning however being uses to being on the move for so long and filling sandbags,..part of a four man crew,..i am soooo stiff today,..so to unlimber i got stuck into housework,..which i am never happy doing,.. but its all done,..as for more filling of sandbags,..no point anymore as its gone beyond the hope of stopping the rise in water and there is nowhere to pump it to,..the Government sent a rep today to see the situation,..financial support to those in need is on the books,..and soon,..we had clear sky today up to this afternoon then the rain arrived again. I agree with you all saying the pictures look nice,..despite the flooding being close to the water is tranquil and beautiful,..its really relaxing.
Philipe, we all know that you are doing a great job. So regardless of the outcomes - You are still a winner in our book! But one thing really concerns me a lot. Which is the spread of gastrointestinal infections, which often follows any type of fool (due to contaminated water supply). And it ALWAYS starts with animals. So please make sure that everybody (specially the pets) all get clean water to drink. I myself always keep a supply of water purification tablets at home. But even if you don't have any, they shouldn't be too hard to find in any drugstore. Even a little bit of Potassium Permanganate powder (a tiny pinch of it for a 20 liter bucket or a jerrycan) will make the water safe to drink. This can easily be gotten from swimming pool supplies. I think the British Indian Army used this in the jungles of Burma during WW2, when they had very little logistic support at the front... Here is another simple way to purifying water. Just heat some stones in a fire, then put them in a small container of water - The heat from the stones will make the water boil (and hopefully kill off the major of problem causing microbes). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DmDfBldlYQ People of course are nowadays well aware to not allow themselves to get sick.
