got some more work done this weekend, culminating in putting in seeds in just under half of the garden space. I put in many trellises, more of those to come as i like pole and climbing varieties of beans. seed-wise i put in Kentucky Wonder and Kentucky Blue green beans. i put in snow peas (i know its late, but i am experimenting). i put in 'dwarf horticultural beans' which is a variety grown for seed at Mt. Vernon (G. Washington's estate) i also planted Whipporwill Cowpeas, and pink eye purple hulled Cowpeas. the whipporwill peas are from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. also from the same place i put Cowhorn Okra. Finally, i put in a raised bed of Blue Hubbard Squash (my first time growing this variety) as well as zucchini and crookneck (yellow) squash. more to come later...
Wow, when you plant, you PLANT! We have Cowhorn Okra here, and it grows to about 6-7' tall and is "spiny" which means you pick it wearing a long-sleeved shirt. It tastes great and is impervious to bugs and drought. Depending on how many zucchini and crooknecks you planted, you may want to start lining up folks to accept the excess right away. Crooknecks are especially nice at the 4-6" stage, split in half, lightly grilled over charcoal, and drizzled with olive oil and a bit of sea salt.
Some work done!,..in fact a lot of work done,..seed wise and trellis wise,..plus the raised bed,..well done,..looking forward to your follow up. Philip
