Looking at my bush/shrub a little better and I found this... ( photo / image / picture from dmouse's Garden )
Think I figured it out. It's a Japanese Quince Tree. This is the flower, with thorns that it produces every spring! Again, from the web since mine has finished flowering... ( photo / image / picture from dmouse's Garden )
I was going to guess a Quince of some sort but when you said no fruit I figured that was a wrong guess. Quince makes a great tasting jam and jelly.
In the 12 years I've lived here, I never paid that much attention to notice the fruit! It's also suppose to be a very fragrant fruit. Too funny! My thought with this one was to prune up from the bottom, to make it more resemble a tree, as well as trying to make it more 'narrow'. DO you know anything about pruning these? Does that seem right? Thanks for your help!
Finished product - after a good pruning. It's hardly producing fruit so figured a good prune this year couldn't hurt. Looked up on the net the best way to prune. Hope I got it right! ( photo / image / picture from dmouse's Garden )
Like apples they fruit on spurs formed when growing branches are cut back, so you may get somw extra fruit. A ripe Quince is a wonderful air freshener in the house.
I had read they are rather fragrant for the house. Can't wait to try some. Allergic to all those chemical type ones...
It looks lovely. You did a very nice job. That must have taken you hours to get it just right. I'll bet you had to rest in that red chair there!
Thank you daisybeans. It took half the afternoon! Exactly the reason the chair was there! Started with all the thin sgraggly 'suckers' around the perimeter, then went after the dead branches, then thinned the stragglers off main branches.... Hoping from here, it's just minor maintenance!
