Ive got a 10" gap between new decking and fence, I was toying with filling the void with gravel and putting in alpine plants .. Will they take as I don't intend to put soil in the void. Next doors garden is higher than mine so there will be soil.for the roots to seek out just didn't want to add soil next to the deck .... Hope this makes sense.

Depends on how much sun they will get (the more the better) and which ones you plant.
If you do choose this option, when you plant them, wash off as much of the compost on the roots as you can and then when planting spread the roots out in the gravel. Otherwise they will be very reluctant to spread their roots away from the original growth medium and into the gravel. Keep watered until they show signs of growing.
Phlox subulata, Silver saxifrages, Aubrieta, small Campanulas all would grow in gravel.
