Late last year I noticed some new plantlets forming around one of my amaryllis bulbs and they have grown since then: Amaryllis 'babies' ( photo / image / picture from Kiasmum's Garden ) I'm assuming that at some stage I will be able to make new plants but I don't know when and how I go about it. All advice gratefully received.
When I kept Amaryllis over and would have these, I would wait until the end of the summer and when I lifted them to wrap in paper and set-away for a couple of months....that is when I would break the little babies off. The idea was to let that green leaf shoot use its photosynthesis to store up the energy in the bulb before breaking it free. At the same time it can and will also take energy to store up from the mother plant. Good luck with that, KM.
If you have the patience, you can wait a long time until the baby is more than ready to be split from the mama. As with my Clivia, the plastic pots become deformed by the growth of the babies. Heck, some of my baby Clivia bloom while still with the mamas.
Thank you Sjoerd. it makes sense to give them the time to build up their strength. Barb,I've already had that happen with another bulb, the pot was almost oval
